This year has been one of the most disruptive experiences for us. Many of the "givens" in life became fragile and unpredictable. We discovered how vulnerable we can be to an unseen virus. Injustice, long kept in power, is being confronted. What lessons in life, faith, and love can we learn from our 2020 experiences?
This week we explore the faith issues of 2020. How has your faith dealt with the challenges, unpredictable, and disruptive events such as COVID-19? Many have sought assurances or comfort from scriptures. Others have encountered a crisis of faith: How could a loving and good God allow such awful and horrible things to happen? Is God punishing us?
There seems to be two lines of thought: this present disruption will permanently change how we live, work, play, and behave in the days following, or it will just be a temporary pause before we "return to normal."
It is at times of disruption and dislocation that many turn to apocalyptic passages or books, such as Revelation. This weekend we will explore one chapter of a three chapter series in Isaiah that states what all apocalyptic literature tries to answer: What is God doing at this disruptive, difficult time?
This is a time of new challenges and opportunities. Will we be changed by them, or quickly return to normal?

Apocalyptic thinking flourished in times of turmoil and dislocation. Such thinking was widespread in the Judaism of the inter-testamental period (that is, in the centuries between the Old and New Testaments).
Although apocalypses varied considerably, it is possible to identify a number of elements common to them generally. For example, dividing time between "Old" and "New" ages, the future is determined, code words, etc.
Apocalyptic texts wrestle with the problem of evil. They assert that "despite all appearances to the contrary, God has everything under control." Believers are exhorted to endure persecution.
Prophetic and apocalyptic texts are similar in many ways, although some distinctions are possible, especially concerning "means and ends," which typically are more other-worldly in the apocalyptic literature.
A number of the ideas and images common to Jewish and Christian apocalyptic writing were also found in surrounding cultures.

Nolan's Community Cleanup Assists Prairie Avenue
|
Our Adopt-A-Street area and the Clokey Park neighborhood streets of East Main & East Wood received a blessing last Saturday when Nolan's Community Cleanup did their first project. Nolan is a 12 year old Stephen Decatur Middle School student who noticed the litter problem near his father's house on East Prairie and organized a clean-up crew to do community service. We shared our litter getter equipment for this project and are very grateful for their efforts to clean up the east side!
