We find ourselves in the middle of the Jacob saga in Genesis this week. At this point in the story, we know a lot about Jacob's past, and we may have decided that we do not like him very much. Let's face it, he is not a very nice guy. He is grasping and scheming. His very name means "Grabber"; he is so named because he came out of the womb grabbing onto the heel of his twin brother Esau. He and his mother tricked his father into giving him the blessing of the family, and when his brother found out about it, Jacob ran in fear. If anything, we may find ourselves wishing that the birthright had gone to the foolish but more likable Esau.
In spite of his well-established faults and schemes, God reaches out to Jacob. In a startling dream-vision, God reveals not only acceptance of Jacob, but also gives him covenant promise! God will partner with this scheming negotiator.
The lesson is simple. God's grace is not contingent on our deserving. God's love is not conditional. God's covenant does not have any fine print. God loves us and will never stop working on us to become more faithful and loving members of God's family.

We continue to keep updated on proper restrictions, recommendations, and guidance for gatherings and activities to reduce risk of COVID-19 activity and exposure in our faith community.
We will resume sanctuary worship services on Sunday, July 26 at 9am.
The prohibition of group singing, the requirement of six feet distance between attendees, and other risk-lowering measures will continue. Thank you for your support and abiding with these required alterations.

Does God Heal Today? Wednesday, July 22, 6 pm:
God is still healing today. The Greek word that means “I save” also means “I heal.” God is concerned not just about our spiritual salvation, but our whole being. One day we shall have a new and perfect body. In this life we will never reach perfection. When God heals someone miraculously today, we get a glimpse of the future when the final redemption of our bodies will take place (Romans 8:23).
Morning Devotion
Each day, except Sunday, Pastor Jason shares a brief 4-7 minute scripture reading, reflection, response and prayer. This devotion is posted to

On July 7, 1970, Disciples on Volunteer Enlistment began operations in a small room adjacent to the boiler in First Christian Church on North Church Street with Ray Batman as coordinator. Discussions about responding to social justice issues and needs began in 1968, with the four Decatur area Disciples of Christ churches, First Christian, Central Christian, Prairie Avenue, and Antioch Christian.
Through the years, Prairie Avenue has supported the efforts and programs of Dove, Inc. We hosted the daycare program, Mother-to-Mother classes, and have been the home of the Dove, Inc. Children's Clothing Room since 2004. Our congregation has served as volunteers for Christmas Basket drives, and program advisory councils. Pastor Jason Butterick served as Dove, Inc. Board of Directors President 2012-2020.
We celebrate Dove's 50th anniversary and will continue to support its efforts to respond and lift the needs and issues of our community.
