Our culture is obsessed with romance. From the novels of Danielle Steele to the "romcoms" playing every year in movie theaters, we like to see two people discover each other, fall in love, overcome obstacles, and end up "happily ever after."
In our scripture reading this Sunday, Abraham is old, Sarah is dead (traditionally upon hearing the news of Isaac's near-death experience), and he is very concerned that Isaac should not marry a Canaanite girl. So without God's guidance, but making one of his servants promise to find a 2nd cousin from the family, Abraham sends his servant back to his homeland. The servant prays to God and comes up with a clever test to identify whom God has chosen to be Isaac's wife: a woman at the well who offers not only water for the servant, but for his camels as well. And it comes to pass!
It may not be as well scripted as a Hollywood love story, but God's plan rarely gets thwarted!
