The life and health of the church is dependent on the commitments and responsibilities of its members. When everyone sees themselves as needed, responsible, and contributing, then amazing transformations can happen. The call to faithful service is not always easy to respond to, but all things are possible when we realize how much God loves us and trusts the church to care for the world.
Be prepared.
For those familiar with Boy Scouts, it is a familiar motto. The parable of the ten bridesmaids (although they are actually grooms-maids if you read it closely) is the first of the last three parables Jesus will share just before his trial, death, and resurrection. This parable only appears in Matthew. The ongoing emphasis is that a return of Jesus may be (or is) delayed, and those caught without the necessities to receive may find themselves outside of the celebration.
Both the oil-managed and the oil-mismanaged grooms-maids fall asleep waiting for the groom to arrive. The oil-mismanaged grooms-maids have to find an oil lamp fuel dealer in the middle of the night, unable to anticipate the unexpected scheduling error.
We should not just casually wait for Jesus to come, we should prepare with actions and decisions marked by wisdom, preparation and mindfulness.
Do we take responsibility where we can, or do we want others to step in and do things for us that we could do ourselves?
It may be too late to find a 24-hour oil seller shop in time to join the celebration of the delayed groom!

CURRENT MITIGATION MEASURES: Mitigation Tier 1 guidelines are now in effect for Macon County. It restricts occupancy and groups to 25% of State Fire Marshall Occupancy or 25 persons, whichever is lower. Our 25% sanctuary capacity is 32 persons, so our number is 25 persons maximum. Since resuming in-person services, we have not been above 25 persons. In-person worship services will be suspended if a positive case of COVID-19 of an attendee is announced, or further mitigations reduce our capacity to gather to 10 persons or less.

THANKSGIVING OFFERING FOR DISCIPLES-RELATED HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS TO BE RECEIVED NOVEMBER 15 & 22
|
The Thanksgiving Offering, received this year on November 15 and 22, directly supports programs and students on the campuses of Disciples-related institutions of higher education, including fifteen colleges and universities as well as seven theological institutions. While supporting these schools has always been an important focus for the Disciples of Christ, this year it is even more important. In the midst of national and global challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, our higher education institutions are facing unprecedented challenges and they need our support now, more than ever.
Despite these unprecedented challenges, Disciples-related schools continue to be places that not only provide education to students, but guidance and care as well. As Yejin Lim, a junior majoring in business at Texas Christian University, shares that the experiences gained by attending a Disciples-related school have been formative in connecting faith to vocation:
There are moments while I walk to class that my heart is full and prayers of thanksgiving pour out naturally. I see the beautiful campus of TCU and pray to Yahweh Yireh, the Lord who provides, for leading me here.
Living as a missionary kid and now as a pastor’s kid, I know my family was not financially stable enough to support my educational expenses. However, the extra financial support I received as a Disciple made it possible for me to attend TCU. I have learned and experienced so much
already in the three years here. Meeting people with various backgrounds has broadened my perspective of the world, strengthening my ability to understand and empathize with others.
|
|
Disciples on Campus has especially created a welcoming space for conversations and occasions to connect with the local community. I have grown academically, spiritually, and professionally from all the opportunities I have faced at TCU.
My dream is to become an influential leader in the business world that demonstrates Christ through my life – being a person who is loving, accepting, and forgiving. I make efforts every
day towards that vision, little by little, and plan to continue my journey at TCU with
thankfulness.
On November 15 and 22, please give generously to the Thanksgiving Offering. Your gift makes a difference in the lives of our students and it makes a difference in the world.

Despite our shortened (and COVID-19) impacted sales season, we were able to sell $972 of gourds. We receive 25% of proceeds ($244) profit. Our sales were about half of last years total.
Scovill Zoo will receive the unsold inventory for their animals. It may take longer for removal due to limited Zoo staff availability.
