High schools grapple with missed traditions, finding options to honor 2020 graduates

LANCASTER — High school graduation is considered a rite of passage to adulthood, a traditional way to recognize students' dedication to learning and their accomplishments.

This year, Fairfield County seniors will still be recognized, but in the interest of safety during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, their ceremonies will not be like the traditions of previous years.

Some ceremonies will be held online, some will be celebrated in school parking lots, and for at least one school, the graduation will take place at the  drive-in movie theater.

Lancaster High School Principal Scott Burre  said while the graduation ceremonies can't be done like other years, it was important to hold them.
