What can YOU do to prevent a swim beach advisory?

There's no nice way to put it; E. coli comes from poop. So the best way to stop E. coli advisories is to keep poop out of the water! Consider doing the following:

Have young children take frequent restroom breaks when recreating.
Keep diapered children out of non-chlorinated water.
Have your septic system routinely inspected for leaks.
Pick up pet waste and dispose of in the garbage.
Practice good land stewardship with livestock and pasture/manure management.

Preventing harmful algae blooms means protecting the watershed. Water must be slow moving, warm in temperature, and have nutrients to feed algae blooms. Nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) are the easiest place for individuals to tackle. Try these:

Wash your car in a designated car wash facility (or on the lawn) to prevent soap/debris from entering storm drains.
Minimize use of lawn and garden fertilizer especially around rain events.
Have your septic system routinely inspected for leaks.

Clark County Public Health monitors the water quality seasonally for harmful algal blooms.
