Latest Updates

Library Branding

We are pleased to announce that we have gotten the Library's branding assets updated with a new "Public Library" logo (replacing the the originally provided "Library Services" one). We have been provided a full color, solid blue, white, and black logos and the sheild logo with the same color schemes. Along with this, we also have letterhead and memo templates. While those assets have Library Administration's address default, you are able to save copies to your own PCs and update them with your own branch information when sending correspondence. These assets and the County's official logos can be found in the T Drive Promo folder under "SJC Branding." Please follow the official "SJC Branding Guidelines" when creating promotional assets. You can find that guide here.

In addition, the email signature has been updated with the new logo and those templates can be found in the same T Drive folder for your branches. Please update your signature as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please email Lauren Ferro at lferro@sjcfl.us.

St. Johns County Commissioners Appoint Joy Andrews Interim County Administrator

The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners appointed Deputy County Administrator Joy Andrews as the Interim County Administrator as it began a national search for a new County Administrator on July 18. "I am humbled by the trust the Board of County Commissioners has placed in me to steer the County services forward while it conducts its national search," Andrews said. "I fully accept the weight of this responsibility. We have dedicated and determined employees who embody the very mission of public service. Together, we will continue charting our course forward with excellent service delivery and an unwavering commitment to the community we love." Click here to read more.

Bookmobile Update

Our Community Outreach Team wanted to give you an update on what in the world has been happening with the Bookmobile. "As you may or may not know, we started experiencing some difficulties with our generator early in the year. Eventually, we had to replace the generator with a brand-new one, ouch. Unfortunately, soon after getting it replaced, it started stalling and leaving us without power and air conditioning. It's been an on-and-off issue for the last few months if you have wondered why we keep canceling stops or using the County van. As I write this, we are driving the Bookmobile back up to Jacksonville for service!

Thankfully, good news is on its way. While it's not guaranteed just yet, our request for a new vehicle is still in the County budget, with just two more hearings in September. If approved, these funds will allow us to get one or two additional vehicles to expand our services and ensure we can reliably deliver our current ones. In the meantime, please remind patrons to check our website for the most up-to-date information on our stops.

More good news – our Friends of the Bookmobile group is officially revived! The community can join the organization to help support the bookmobile and Community Outreach Services as a whole. Applications to join can be found here

Finally, a HUGE kudos to Dalonja and Ashley for dealing with last-minute changes, driving back and forth from Jacksonville, switching vehicles, slinging crates, and still providing excellent customer service in this insanely hot weather. Please give them a shout-out for going above and beyond!

From the Director

L.A. Times

Greetings, Team Library! We’re in the “dog days of summer” with the heat! The phrase is a reference to Sirius, the Dog Star. During the “Dog Days” period, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. During summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the tilt of the Earth causes the Sun’s rays to hit at a more direct angle and for a longer period throughout the day. Unfortunately, this means longer, hotter days.

So, let’s take a deep breath and find ways to “beat the heat”! Do you like to swim? Boat? Picnic? Make a list of things you want to do in the summer that just isn’t possible or as much fun to do in the winter and take advantage of the dog days of summer to do your favorite things. Of course, you can always find some shade to read a new book!

Database Spotlight

Each month, we will be spotlighting a database that will appear in the upcoming library newsletter. This will give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the database and better prepare you to assist patrons. Included with the overview is a user guide and tutorial video. In the September patron newsletter, we will be promoting Brainfuse HelpNow.

Brainfuse HelpNow™ provides differentiated learning solutions for users of diverse needs and background. Students communicate with live tutors using an interactive whiteboard to chat, write, draw, copy/paste text or images and graph homework problems.

HelpNow offers live tutor access for homework help, skills building and test preparation where after taking a quiz, the user can connect directly to a live tutor from the test center without having to return to the main page. Because HelpNow is personalized, both the student and the tutor can access quiz questions to do an intensive test prep which may include loading lessons on the whiteboard. All live sessions are saved and can be replayed as well as shared with friends and teachers by email. Using the CloudPack feature, students can store and upload MS Word, Excel, JPG, and other accepted file types directly onto the whiteboard.

The Writing Lab and the 24/7 Center options give users the freedom to receive assistance at any time of the day without connecting with a live tutor. Users can submit papers through the Writing Lab for a detailed feedback. 24/7 Center is for non-writing assignments such as math or science. All reviews and comments from our tutors are found and stored in the Message Center which is found on the student homepage.

LEAP helps patrons build academic skills through targeted lessons, quizzes, and live, online tutoring. LEAP creates a learning plan based on a skills assessment that is taken at the beginning of the course. Flashbulb is a robust, learning resource where you can find flashcards or create your own. There are many ways this can be used. Brainfuse students have created sets to use with their friends and teachers have created sets for their students to use.

For students who prefer to work independently and form their own online study group, HelpNow offers a set of collaborative tools – MEET and Brainwave. MEET allows students to schedule their own online sessions using the Brainfuse MEET whiteboard which is specifically designed for a group setting. Brainwave is a recordable whiteboard where students can draw, write on the whiteboard and chat then save and email it to others for feedback.

The Adult Learning Center is the adult learners’ version of HelpNow™ where patrons can access High School Equivalency prep, US Citizenship test prep, resume assistance, Microsoft Office support, and Career Resources. The Writing Lab, Send Question, and Skills Building are also included in the Adult Learning Center suite.

How to Find Balance in a World of Constant

(and sometimes unwanted) Change

Balance is not something we can get; it’s a state of mind. It’s the realization that life is not stable but in constant motion. Balance is bringing things into harmony. It’s not something that you can get, but something that you continually do. We are living in a time of 24/7 news, social media, an overwhelming amount of information, and a lot of uncertainty, which can leave us feeling worried, uncomfortable, and fearful. But as with any challenge or change, the best way to heal is by moving forward.

During this webinar, we will discuss techniques to help you find balance, including:

• Setting boundaries

• Maintaining your morale

• Adjusting your priorities

• Rethinking your next steps

Staff Shout-outs

Lauren Boross, Bartram Trail Branch Circulation Supervisor

Lauren Boross joined SJCPLS in October 2022 as a Library Assistant and was recently promoted to Circulation Supervisor at the Bartram Trail Branch. Prior to joining us, Lauren worked as a supervisory park ranger and volunteer coordinator for 12 years in the National Park Service at Channel Islands National Park in California. She moved to St. Johns in 2021 and volunteered briefly for the Ponte Vedra FOL. Lauren loves horror and thriller books and movies. She has two kitties – Bebe and Kiwi – who are her children. She also has been teaching group fitness classes since 2016 and owned a studio in California focused on mini trampoline and dance fitness classes. She loves suggesting new reads for patrons, especially when they come back and say that they enjoyed the book and want more recommendations!

The Good Stuff

Like a Good Neighbor...

The relationship that has evolved between the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch and Trader Joe's is an excellent example of "Good Neighbors" working together! The branch has been receiving generous donations of leftover flowers and greens from the local Trader Joe's store. Eileen Davenport, a PVBFOL member and volunteer at Seymour's Bookstore, picks up the flowers, arranges them, and places them around the library for all the patrons, volunteers, and employees to enjoy. Patrons visiting the library and staff can't help but smile when they see the vibrant blooms on display. "It really brightens up the library. The flowers look lovely and smell so nice. It's such a nice gesture from Trader Joe's to spread this joy," said Branch Manager Kim Odom. The flower arrangements have become a big part of the library's welcoming atmosphere that all look forward to regularly. Thank you, Trader Joe's for being our good neighbor and friend!

Community FOCUS Hastings Event

The Hastings Branch Library, Parks and Recreation, Team UP Hastings, and the Hastings Friends of the Library hosted the 12th Annual School Supply Giveaway at the 5th Annual "Community FOCUS Hastings" event on Saturday, July 22. The event occurred at the library and across the street at Al Wilke Park. We had over 50 volunteers helping, and approximately 750 people attended the event!

The Library hosted district schools, SJCSD school departments, HHS Social Services, and the Supervisor of Elections. School supplies, provided by the Hastings FOL, were distributed to over 250 children from our local area. Health services were also offered onsite to get children school-ready with immunizations from the SJC Health Dept. and sport and Pre-K physicals provided by Flagler Health + and Wildflower Clinic.

The Community Resource at Al Wilke Park was attended by multiple agencies and organizations offering information and swag, including multiple SJC departments (Emergency Management, Solid Waste, and Parks & Rec) as well as 4-H, Scouts, Aza Health, Island Doctors, Rotary, and Comcast. Community Partnership School at South Woods hosted a gift card raffle where 50 families received cards from area restaurants, grocery stores, Walmart, and certificates for family outings at local entertainments. The big prizes included 5-day passes for a family at Daytona Lagoon and a 2-hour Arcimoto rental from Seaside Adventures in St. Augustine. A Touch-a-Truck event was also featured on the football field at Al Wilke. Simon's House food pantry provided grilled hot dogs for all, and of course, no library-attended event is complete without a big bubble-making station!

You know it's a successful event when folks are standing around dripping in 95+ degree weather smiling and talking about "NEXT YEAR"!
