Across the nation, pool-related chemical incidents are on the rise resulting in injuries to bathers and pool operators. This has been attributed to shortages of certain chlorine products resulting in operators using alternative products they may not be familiar with increasing the likelihood of chemical incidents and injuries.
It's important that pool operators follow these tips to keep themselves and bathers safe:
- Always keep chemical storage and equipment room locked.
- Read and follow directions on product labels.
- Only allow those who have been trained in pool chemical safety practices to handle pool chemicals.
- Never handfeed chemicals into the pool/spa while bathers are present (including salt for in-line salt pool generators).
- Wear safety equipment, such as gloves masks and goggles.
- Do not store possible ignition sources, particularly gasoline-, diesel-, or gas-powered equipment in the chemical storage area or pump room.
- Never mix or re-use chemical containers.
- Keep different pool chemicals (e.g. chlorine and acid) separated.
If you plan on making changing to your pool/spa disinfection system you must notify DLCntyHealthWaterRec@clark.wa.gov to ensure that design and installation meets code requirements to prevent accident and injury.
