WA Pool Code Revision Update

Our pool code, WAC 246-262, is currently under revision by DOH with a goal to more closely align with the Model Aquatic Health Code.


Have opinions? The informal comment period opens August 1st -September 30th so make sure your voice is heard!

Have you heard of the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC)?


The MAHC is put together by a team with the CDC as a guide to prevent injury and illness at public aquatic venues.


Locally we use it as a reference to address new and emerging topics in aquatic facilities that our current state code does not cover, and to update our own state code.

Know you sewer!

Operating a pool and spa means at some point you will need to drain water to waste. Find your sewer below and make sure to contact them prior to a significant wastewater discharge to prevent overloading the system. They may require measures like dechlorination, flow control, or pH adjustment to protect the sewer system.

Accidents happen

Even with the best of preparation, accidents happen.


When they do, we ask that you contact public health to report the incident within 48 hrs so it can be assessed and documented properly. Use this form to gather essential information to report to your local health department


This action is not punitive and is intended to be educational and informative, aimed at preventing similar incidents from happening again.

Types of incidents to report to public health:

  • Fatal drownings
  • Non-fatal drownings (drowning events with successful resuscitation)
  • Medical events occurring in the pool/spa that require 911/EMS
  • Slips, trips or falls that require 911/EMS
  • Impact/diving injuries that require 911/EMS
  • Chemical spills or injuries that require 911/EMS
  • Other incidents that require 911/EMS or where the person seeks medical attention on their own
