Emerging Industries: Cold Plunges and Cold Spas

You may be familiar with the "Polar Bear Plunge" or the concept of ice baths. The practice is becoming popular in mainstream society in the form of cold spas and individual cold plunge tanks. If your facility has ever considered adding one, here are some important answers to common questions:

Q: Do cold plunges require a permit?

A: YES! If water is recirculating, you likely need a permit with Public Health.

Q: I want to add an individual cold plunge tank to my facility for contrast therapy, can I?

A: At this time, there are no individual recirculating cold plunge tanks that meet code requirements in the state of WA, and therefore individual tanks are not allowed.

Q: If I can't have an individual cold plunge tank, what are my options?

A: Communal cold spas are allowed in Clark County. These are typically set in the ground, tile/plaster, designed and built by a pool contractor, and have NSF50 equipment. Think of a traditional commercial spa but with a chiller instead of a heater.

Q: Are there times when a permit is not required for a cold plunge?

A: Yes. If the cold plunge is used for therapeutic purposes and use is monitored by a physician, or if water is emptied and refilled between each user a permit is not required. Like pools, cold plunges for private personal use do not need a permit.

Reminder: cold plunging comes with risks, practice safely!

Maintenance for the Off Season

Drain covers typically expire every 5-7 years depending on the manufacturer. Prolonged chemical and water contact makes the plastic brittle and can lead to cracks. Always record the month & year drain covers are replaced so you know when they are due.

Stickers and painted depth markers often come off and wear away during normal use. Make sure to replace as needed and include "FT" units for feet. Depth markers belong on the deck and at the waterline.

Have a sand filter? Depending on the type of "sand", it might be time to replace it. Some need to be changed every 2-3 years, others can last for 10+ years with proper maintenance.

Over time concrete pool decks get cracked and worn, potentially creating a tripping hazard. Now is a great time to patch and repair damaged areas of your pool deck while the foot traffic is lower.
