walter A Message from Executive Director Walter Kalman

I want to introduce you to NJ SWERS - the most important thing that's happened for Social Work in NJ during the past 15 years!

After years of work by NASW-NJ and its many partners, New Jersey adopted the Social Workers' Licensing Act of 1991 which recognized Social Workers as professionals alongside Doctors, Nurses, Psychiatrists and Psychologists.

This year, the New Jersey Social Work Education, Research and Scholarship Corporation (NJ SWERS) was created to address the professional needs of the over 20,000 trained social workers as well as social work students enrolled in 9 schools of social work in the state of New Jersey.

As its name suggests, NJ SWERS has established goals in the areas of Education, Research and Scholarship, and it complements the work of several organizations dedicated to the practice of social work in New Jersey, including the National Association of Social Workers.
What this means for Social Workers is that we will be able to turn to NJ SWERS for help us improve the professional and economic status of Social Workers in our state.

The partnership between NJ SWERS and NASW-NJ will enable us to improve and expand major events for Social Workers such as the Annual Meeting of the Profession/Continuing Education Conference which we hold each year in May. Please watch for information about this year's Conference (May 1-3, 2016 at the Borgata in Atlantic City) and other programs hosted by NJ SWERS in the future.

We are very excited that NJ SWERS is hosting our 45th Anniv Gala (see below for ticket information). Plan to be there as we celebrate our fabulous members, 45 years of great Chapter programs and events, and the birth of NJ SWERS.

On a more somber note, it is with great sadness that I share the news that our colleague, Bert Goldberg, passed away this morning. Bert has been a member of NASW since 1964, and has been an active reviewer of CE applications for our Continuing Education Approval Committee since the Committee was established.

Bert was Executive Director of the Center for Leadership and Management, and an Associate Professor at Rutgers University. The family plans a private funeral. Our condolences go out to Bert's family, colleagues, students, and friends.
