NASW Modernization Meetings

There seems to be some confusion regarding two meetings in August that relate to the proposed Modernization process that the National NASW office has proposed. So that our office is not inundated with calls, here is the information for both:

The first meeting is a Town Hall Meeting regarding perspectives of the Modernization process. It will be facilitated by the Coalition of Concerned Members. (This is the coalition that emerged in response to the NASW Modernization proposal process and content).

Date: August 8, 3:00-5:00 pm
Register here:

The second meeting is the Special Meeting of the Membership which was called due to a petition drive of members by the Coalition of Concerned Members. This is the meeting that was rescheduled from April after the original one was cancelled by National. This meeting will be facilitated by NASW National.

Date: August 25, 3:00 pm

Registration for this meeting is Closed.

We recommend you read information on both the NASW national site about Modernization (, as well as at the Concerned Members United site (

Both of these are virtual meetings and you can log in by computer. More instructions are available on the respective websites.

We have been informed by the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners (the NJ Licensing Board) that the License Renewal web site will be shut down for maintenance from Thursday, August 4 - Sunday, August 7.
You will not be able to renew your license until the web site is available again (probably after 12 PM) on August 8th.

Please remember that you have until August 31st to renew your license.

See the NASW-NJ Web site for more information about the renewal process. Also, see our Calendar for upcoming CE programs and the Online CE Institute for online courses. All of these courses are accepted by the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners. More information is available on our web site here.

**NEW FEATURE** Private Practice Q&A

Q: What are the state regulations governing release of patient information to insurance companies for payment? Do providers need to submit a client's full medical record to ensure payment?
A: Providers must provide progress notes but should not divulge "psychotherapy notes." Providers should always keep in mind that the Board of Social Work Examiners (BSWE), not insurers, regulates their practice. Insurers will generally ask for more than is permitted by the BSWE Regulations.
The BSWE Regulations ( define what you can release. Please read section explaining this (12.4 - Release of Client Record) to be able to argue your case with the insurance company.
