Message from Executive Director Walter Kalman

Have you seen the recent emails from NASW about what we are doing for social workers and our clients?   For months now, NASW National has been working with U.S. Senators Stabenow and Mikulski, and U.S. Representative Lee to build bipartisan support for the Improving Access to Mental Health Act (S. 2173/H.R. 3712) in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. If this bill becomes law it will:
  • Increase Medicare reimbursement for clinical social worker services from 75% to 85% of the physician fee schedule rate
  • Eliminate restrictions on the delivery of social work services in skilled nursing facilities
  • Expand the statutory definition of clinical social worker services to include all services (including Health and Behavior Assessment and Intervention services) that clinical social workers are authorized to perform under their respective state licensure regulations

We believe this bill is credible and politically viable, but we need your support to get is passed. Please ask your NJ Senators and Representative to co-sponsor and support this legislation. This can go a long way to getting this legislation adopted. Thank you for your advocacy to help yourself, your clients and the profession.
