December 2019

We’ve reached the spot on the calendar where you start to reflect on your year, trying to figure out if it was successful. Usually when doing so, we default to the common—and often numerical—definitions of success, but there is more to "success" than the balance of a bank account, a letter grade, square footage of a house or numbers on a spreadsheet.

What about all the other “stuff” you did this year?

Did you try something new and scary, like taking a leap and starting a new business? Did you demonstrate self-discipline and pay off a debt or crush that fitness goal that seemed out of reach? Did you decide to live life, instead of just managing it, by buying that second home or deciding retirement might finally be calling?

Reflecting on why those milestones feel so good to you can help you define what success looks like for you.
What does success feel like for you? Don’t think about money or time or quantifiable metrics. What is the feeling? It’s tough! But defining that feeling will help you figure out how to get it, and how to be successful. Read Thomas Koulopoulos’ “5 Steps for Defining Your Personal Path to Success” to help you define your personal version of success.

Trying to decide if you should invest extra money, or use it to pay off debt? Knowing the driver for why you want to do either can help you make the decision. Does paying off debt mark success for you? Or do you want to start building that nest egg?

As the year-end approaches, it’s time to think about steps you can take so you don’t leave money on the table. There are financial moves to make now to help lower your tax liability and ensure you’re getting the most out of your financial services. These savings can help to fund adventures in the new year! See our guide to “Avoid Leaving Money on the Table.”
