February 2026

Greetings!

Love is in the air! From Valentine’s dances to Black History commemorations, February’s calendar is packed with heartfelt fun for everyone. Make a date with family and friends!

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month traces its origins to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week to spotlight the achievements of Black Americans. He chose the second week of February to align with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two figures central to the fight for freedom and equality.

The observance expanded in 1976, when President Gerald Ford urged the nation to honor Black history and culture for the entire month. Every American president since has continued the tradition, each year endorsing a theme that encourages deeper reflection on the legacy and impact of Black Americans.

Join us in celebrating this year’s theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, at the following events:

Explore the rich history of African-American culture in Gwinnett during the Explore Black History Bus Tour on Saturday, February 21. Be sure to pack lunch for this four-hour tour! Cost is $11.
