Juneteenth National Independence Day, observed on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the 1865 arrival of Union troops in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Although slavery persisted in some areas until the Thirteenth Amendment’s ratification in December 1865, Juneteeth is considered the longest-running African American holiday, becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
On Saturday, June 14, we’re celebrating African-American culture and heritage at the Freedom & Legacy Juneteenth event from 11:00am to 2:00pm at OneStop Centerville in Snellville with fun games, vibrant art, and history reflecting the ongoing journey of liberation — from South Gwinnett’s Promised Land to the APEX Museum and beyond.
Then, unleash your creativity at Juneteenth Brushes & Beverages from noon to 3:00pm at Lucky Shoals Park. This instructor-led painting experience for ages 13 and older invites you to craft something beautiful with bold colors, good vibes, and non-alcoholic sips. A canvas and all supplies are included with a payment of $35.
