News from our 12 dioceses | | |
June 11, 2021
It has been almost 8 months since our former bishop announced that he would resign, and it has been almost 6-months since his terminal sabbatical began on January 1st of this year. We have worked hard as a diocesan family and have come a long way in that short time. While we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done, the Standing Committee feels that the diocese is ready to begin the work toward electing the 10th Bishop Diocesan of Albany. Therefore: The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany, acting as the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese, calls for the election of the 10th Bishop Diocesan of Albany. The Episcopal Church of Saints Peter & John (Auburn, NY) hosted a COVID-19 vaccination clinic in conjunction with their soup kitchen ministry yesterday. The Cayuga County Health Department vaccinated several dozen individuals, mostly regular guests of the soup kitchen.
"Nancy Purdy [of the county health department] was masterful at talking with guests, quickly establishing relationships and trust, and getting folks vaccinated," said the Rev. John Rohde, priest of Ss. Peter & John. "We also served 120 lunches—it's what I call (humbly) Kingdom work."

Witnessing unwarranted suffering is a solemn duty of the priesthood. But when one of my parishioners died of Covid-19 in a New York State prison, I felt the need to not only witness but to also tell the story he no longer can — the story of a prison system that failed to protect his life and the lives of so many others in its care, subjecting them to confusion, fear and even death.
This man committed a crime and was sentenced to two years in prison; he was not sentenced to death. But death is the penalty he received. I hope that my parishioner’s story will heighten the sense of urgency for a wholesale reform of New York’s prisons. Read the whole story >

Holyrood Church/ Santa Cruz was designated a Landmark by the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission. For over 125 years Holyrood Church / Iglesia Santa Cruz has been the heart and soul of Washington Heights, " writes Fr. Luis Barrios, priest-in-charge. "The beauty of being a Landmark is defined not only by the prettiness of its physical structure but also by its ability to allow the community to have access to enjoy this space as a zone of liberation to reaffirm and accompany them in their daily struggles. Hence, we are proud to move our church into this new phase of interconnectedness and interdependence with the community. In the midst of a pandemic that calls for physical distancing, we have told the people that this building is theirs and it continues to be a social approach that makes us better people. Thanks to all the people who made this dream come true. We are a community Landmark friendly and hospitable church."
