Ira J. Bedzow, Ph.D., is Named UNESCO Chair of Bioethics 

A long-standing champion of biomedical ethics in health care, New York Medical College (NYMC) has been awarded the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair in Bioethics. Sponsored by UNESCO, this Chair is part of an international network of universities and research centers committed to improving ethics education in medical schools. As a key facilitator in the effort to bring the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics to NYMC, Ira J. Bedzow, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Biomedical Ethics and Humanities Program at NYMC, has been named chair of the program.  

Department of Surgery Hosts Sixteenth Annual Louis R.M. Del Guercio, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day

The Sixteenth Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day on December 18, was a success on all fronts: an increase in abstract submissions including a 47 percent increase by students, an increase in attendance, up 27.6 percent, and a stimulating keynote speech by Michal Laniado Schwartzman, Ph.D., second from right, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology. 

Graduate Student Association Aims to Enhance Student Life 

The new officers of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) have been hard at work, aiming to enhance graduate student life, both socially and professionally, in their first few months in office. They most recently hosted its fourth successful "Snowman Project," the GSA's major community outreach initiative to bring holiday gifts to children in need, partnering with Sheltering Arms, an organization based in New York City that provides resources to families in need, according to GSA President Kristy Tefft, far right. 

Center for Disaster Medicine Hosts Pediatric Focused Disaster Response Training 

More than 75 Westchester community members participated in a two-day Pediatric Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness course at New York Medical College (NYMC) on December 18 and 19, to learn how to address the specific needs of pediatric patients in the event of a community incident. The latest course developed by the NYMC's Center for Disaster Medicine taught participants to recognize and address issues specific to the pediatric population that can occur during disaster events.

Lindsay C. Farrell, M.B.A., left, instructor of family and community medicine and president and chief executive officer, Open Door Family Medical Center, an ambulatory care program affiliate of the College, and Deborah Novick, director of BioInc@NYMC, were appointed to the Westchester County Association board of directors.

Jana Veliskova, M.D., Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, neurology, and of  obstetrics and gynecology, was invited to serve as a member of editorial board of Epilepsia, the preeminent international journal devoted to epilepsy and the official journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
