Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., Is Appointed Vice President for Research 

Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., has been named vice president for research. A man of many hats, he also oversees the Office of Research Administration and holds the titles of professor of pharmacology and professor of microbiology and immunology at New York Medical College (NYMC), provost for biomedical research and chief biomedical research officer for Touro College and University System, and professor of dental medicine at Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC. 

In his newest role, Dr. Amar will promote and strengthen basic, translational and clinical research and nurture the scientific community especially providing biomedical resources-all to ensure NYMC remains competitive. Read the full article on Dr. Amar.


Movie Highlights the Importance of Open Access 

The Health Sciences Library hosted a movie screening and discussion of Paywall: The Business of Scholarship on December 19. The movie highlights the need for open access to science and research, a need that the library is very much in support of through its institutional repository, Touro Scholar. If you missed the screening, you can watch the movie here.

ACCOLADES
Rifat Latifi, M.D. , professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery, has been named the first president of the Kosova College of Surgeons (KCS) , which was established on December 3, 2018. He is a founding member of the KCS, a unified body of 14 surgical societies of the country, representing more than 800 practicing surgeons, modeled after the American College of Surgeons. The KCS first Clinical Congress will be held in June.
