SOM Hosts Children's Health Translational Science Institute Workshop
|
The School of Medicine and D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., dean of the School of Medicine, hosted a workshop on January 8 to announce plans to inaugurate a Children's Health Translational Science Institute at NYMC. The day featured presentations by clinicians and basic scientists to explore ongoing and proposed pediatric research at NYMC, discussions about potential areas of collaboration and growth in investigative work on campus and the need for developing a team approach to initiating translational research between basic science and clinical investigators. The topics included: immunology in childhood diseases; research in neonatal and childhood neurological diseases; and research in neonatal and chronic pulmonary diseases.

Micro Mentee is Named an Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist

Yasir Khan,
an Ossining High School student, who has been working with Dana Mordue, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, since January 2014, has been named one of 300 high school student semifinalists
in the Intel Science Talent Search 2016. Semifinalists were selected from 1,750 entrants from 512 high schools in 43 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and six American and international high schools overseas. He will receive a $1,000 award from the Intel Foundation with an additional $1,000 going to his high school.
Mr. Khan's research focuses on developing tools (monoclonal antibodies and antigens) required to create an assay that can be used to prevent transfusion-associated babesiosis. The Babesia parasite is naturally transmitted by ticks and Babesiosis has become the most common cause of transfusion-associated infection. There is currently no method approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to screen for Babesia parasites in blood donations. Mr. Khan was also named a Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology semi-finalist and came in third place in the microbiology division at the 2015 Westchester Science and Engineering Fair.

 Be sure to stop by the Chancellor's latest exhibit, presenting items of interest on the history of medicine and science displayed on the wall between Doc's Café and the bookstore in the Basic Sciences Building. The current exhibit features Nobel Prize Winners on first day covers. A first day cover is an envelope or card bearing a stamp which is cancelled on the first day the stamp is on sale. The display includes original signatures of Kary Banks Mullis, Burton Richter, the late Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield, the late Linus Carl Pauling, and James D. Join Mill Etienne, M.D. '02, M.P.H., at Local Event on Brain Health Awareness
Mill Etienne, M.D. '02, M.P.H., adjunct assistant professor of neurology and advisory dean for the Burgess-Holley House, will host a community education event on Monday, January 18 at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, N.Y. Dr. Etienne, along with NYMC medical students and community members who have personal experience with sports concussions and are now serving as patient ambassadors, will address different aspects of optimizing brain health including exercise, diet and sleep as well as the topics of concussion, epilepsy, stroke and dementia. , a Dr.P.H. candidate in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, received the Best Doctoral-Level Student Abstract Award from the Community Health Planning and Policy Development Section of the 2015 American Public Health Association Conference, held in November in Chicago. She presented "Breaking the code: When access to health care is comparable, socio-economic differences determine health outcomes -- A community needs assessment in the Hudson Valley Region, N.Y."
