On September 12, the School of Medicine (SOM) hosted the High Impact Population Health Conference, featuring a panel of experts sharing their data and perspectives on how population health management is being implemented and discussing strategies for successful community engagement. The panel included: D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., left, dean, School of Medicine; (moderator) Lori Weir Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, right, associate dean of community health affairs, assistant professor of family community medicine, and director of family medicine clerkship; Lee Green, M.D., M.P.H., second from left, chairman and professor, the Department of Family Medicine, University of Alberta; Deborah Viola, M.B.A., Ph.D., vice president, data management and analytics, WMC Health PPS; Georges Potworowski, Ph.D., second from right, assistant professor, Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior, SUNY Albany; Bonnie Reyna, M.P.H., director, community workforce transformation, WMC Health PPS; and Suzanne Kaseta, M.D., MMM, FAAP, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics and physician director of Community Quality Initiatives, Boston Children's Health Physicians. 

According to Dr. Solomon, who organized the conference, the dialogue was motivating: "We had a wealth of subject matter expertise, and the collaboration and energy produced some important and actionable outtakes. While we agreed that health care reform will require the complete transformation of health care delivery systems and will take place over many years, we did recognize that successful medical home practices have already transformed patient care into a team process where each team member is empowered to identify issues and create solutions."

 

On October 2, the atmosphere was festive and uplifting at the American Heart Association's Westchester County Heart Walk at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, N.Y. The New York Medical College team was front and center in their bright red tee shirts and was one of the top fundraising teams, raising more than $6,000 to fight heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., dean of the School of Medicine served as executive champion of the walk. The event was kicked off by the Arrhythmias, the School of Medicine acapella group, singing the National Anthem. Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students then took to the stage to lead a dynamic warm-up for the crowd before they embarked on the three-mile walk.
