School of Medicine Retreat Highlights Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and the Education of Medical Learners
D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., right, dean of the School of Medicine, hosted a School of Medicine strategic planning retreat on "Educating for Quality: Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and the Education of Medical Learners" on Friday, October 2. The day's guest speaker was the Association of American Medical College's (AAMC) senior director of continuing education and improvement Dave Davis, M.D., who is also professor emeritus at the University of Toronto. As head of the AAMC's continuing health care education and improvement program, Dr. Davis works with individuals, associations, groups and academic medical centers to create scholarly, integrated models of effective, performance-based continuing education. Dr. Davis addressed the challenge of integrating quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) into the education of medical students, residents and faculty. He related the experiences of more than 50 academic medical centers that undertook organizational, educational and faculty development initiatives facilitated by AAMC programs to align education with quality improvement (Aligning and Educating for Quality - ae4Q) and to train faculty to be better educators in QI/PS (called Teaching for Quality - Te4Q). At the end of the retreat, work groups provided the School of Medicine with strategic recommendations for incorporating QI in partnership with hospitals, optimizing the clinical learning environment, developing metrics for QI integration across the medical education continuum and sharing best practices.
