The NYMC Family Health Center is Now Open

The   Family Health Center at New York Medical College (NYMC), located at 19 Skyline Drive, is officially open for business. The new office, adjacent to Touro Dental Health on the third floor, is staffed by NYMC faculty from the Department of Family and Community M edicine and can attend to many  health   care n eeds on premise, including laboratory testing  and vaccination. Same day and walk-in appointments are available and flu shots are available at no cost for most insurance plans.

Jane M. Ponterio, M.D.   '81, Is Named  Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs   of the School of Medicine

Jane M. Ponterio, M.D.   ' 81,   center,  assistant professor of  o bstetrics  and g ynecology ,   has been appointed  senior associate dean for student affairs  of the School of Medicine (SOM) , effective October 1.  Dr. Ponterio is  responsible for  leadership and management of all the functions, programs and projects of the School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs and  is the liaison of all of the student support offices.  A   New  York Medical College (NYMC)  alumna , Dr. Ponterio  previously  served as vice president for academic affairs and designated institutional official for graduate medical education at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) .  




Race for Rehab Is Still Running Strong After Twenty-One Years

New York Medical College's (NYMC) Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students in the School of Health Sciences and Practice hosted the 21st Annual Race for Rehab on the Valhalla campus on October 13. The certified 5K race, which has been organized by D.P.T. students since 1999, raised more than $6,000 this year for Achilles International, a worldwide non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire individuals with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream running and athletic events.


NYMC Study Identifies Effective Treatment for Individuals with POTS

After studying patients suffering from a history of fainting and similar symptoms related to Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)-a circulation disorder characterized by insufficient flow of blood to the heart when moving from a lying down to standing position-investigators from New York Medical College (NYMC) saw their efforts published in  The Journal for Pediatrics .  Under the leadership of lead author,  Marvin S.  Medow , Ph.D.,  professor of pediatrics and physiology and associate director of the Center for Hypotension, members of the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2 020  Kenneth  Guber  and  Shilpan  Chokshi ,  sought to discover if oral rehydrating solution (ORS) was as effective as intravenous saline when used to treat patients prone to fainting.

NYMC Makes an Impact at the Heart Walk

The   New York Medical College  (NYMC)  community  was a sight in bright red t - shirts  at the American Heart Association's Westchester County Heart Walk at the  Kensico  Dam in Valhalla, New York, on October 5.  The  Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Class of 20 21  led the crowd in a dynamic warm-up and offered blood pressure mon itoring and posture screenings and the  NYMC team  raised more than $6,000 to fight heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

Be sure to stop by the Chancellor's latest display presenting items of interest on the history of medicine and science on the wall next to Doc's Café in the Basic Sciences Building. The current exhibit features the conquest of polio depicted on U.S. first day covers, envelopes or cardsbearing stamps which are cancelled on the first day the stamp is on sale. The exhibit featuresimages of Jonas Salk, M.D., and Albert Sabin, M.D., and others with stamps cancelled on March 8, 2006.

ACCOLADES
Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A. , dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, was named to City & State New York's Westchester Power 100 list honoring the 100 most influential people in government, business, health care, education and nonprofits. He was  recognized at a reception at  Whitby  Castle in Rye, New York, on October 17.
Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A.,   chancellor and chief executive, received the 2019 Joseph Wharton Award for Social Impact  at the  annual Joseph Wharton Awards Dinner  at the Essex House in New York City  on October The award is presented to an  alumnus who has had the greatest impact in public service, social enterprise or philanthropy.
Zvi  G. Loewy, Ph.D.,  a djunct professor of microbiology and immunology, received a  Basic Scientific Research Award from  the  American College of Prosthodontists' first-ever  Journal of Prosthodontics  awards program for his authorship on  Differential Mucosal Gene Expression Patterns in Candida-Associated, Chronic Oral Denture Stomatitis,  published in December 2018.
Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FAMWA, FRSPH ,  right,  professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management and global health director , and  Colleen Brennan , R.N., an M.P.H. student in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York City in September as  NGO representatives .
Dr. Murthy,  right, also donated  a portable ultrasound machin e to  Wilhelmina  Jallah , M . D . , M . P . H .,  health minister of Liberia ,  at the Permanent Mission of Liberia to the  United Nations  during the  United Nations  Gen eral  Assembly . Dr. Murthy works  with the  Rickart  Foundation in Australia to procure medical equipment  for  low income countries.
Roxana Nahvi,  an M.D./Ph.D. candidate, p resented a poster "Cognitive Behavioral and Creative Arts Style Group Therapy in East Harlem Adolescents with Depressive Symptoms ,"  at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS)  2019 Mental Health Service C onference in New York City on October 4.
Robert A. Ollar, Ph.D.,  clinical assistant professor of neurology, presented "Neurologists Take Heed Lyme Neuroborreliosis Mimicry is Afoot" at the Fourth Annual Lyme Disease in the Era of Precision Medicine Conference on October 19 in New York City.


Luis F. Riquelme, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-S , right, associate professor of speech-language pathology (SLP) and director of the Advanced Certificate Program in Pediatric Dysphagia, participated in the  NewYork -Presbyterian Rehabilitation Research Day in New York City on September 13. He and his team presented three posters, one of which was chosen for an oral presentation. For the second consecutive year,  Dr. Riquelme,  far left, associate professor of along with  Alexandra  Soyfer , M.S., CCC-SLP,  c linical instructor of speech-language pathology, travelled with SLP students from New York Medical College to Puerto Rico for a week-long advanced practicum at Hospital  Menonita -Caguas. The students were matched with graduate students from Universidad Ana G. MĂ©ndez,  Gurabo  Campus, to promote the practice of medical speech-language pathology on the island, in efforts to provide better care to patients with swallowing and communication disorders in the acute care setting. The project also included training of university clinical supervisors. 

Dr. Riquelme also  presented two research projects at the Ninth European Society for Swallowing Disorders Congress in Vienna, Austria, September 19-21. One paper on patterns of pill swallowing in adults was in collaboration with Ms. Catherine (Casey) Sullivan, SLP student and research assistant, and the other focused on better understanding the physiological changes in swallow in persons with dementia was in collaboration with  Ashwini  Marini  Namasivayam -MacDonald,  Ph.D., CCC-SLP, a ssistant  professor of communication sciences and disorders at Adelphi University.


NYMC faculty members on the Westchester Medical Center Heart Transplantation Team were honored with the Team Award at the Sixth Annual Westchester Doctors of Distinction event on September 24 at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle, New York. The team is led by David Spielvogel, M.D., left, professor of surgery, and Alan Gass, M.D., right, professor of medicine, and key members include: Chhaya Aggarwal-Gupta, M.D., assistant professor of medicine; Gregg M. Lanier, M.D., associate professor of medicine; Elliot Jay Levine, M.D., clinical assistant professor of medicine; Ramin Malekan, M.D., assistant professor of medicine; Masashi Kai, M.D., assistant professor of surgery; Joshua B. New York Medical College  has a connection to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow's famed author Washington Irving?

The gothic American author from Sleepy Hallow, New York- whose spooky imagination gave us the Headless Horseman- helped his younger contemporary, William Cullen Bryant secure  
a  London publishing contract. That contract would eventually help establish Bryant's overseas reputation as America's leading poet.
