Class of 2022 Robes Up for White Coat Ceremony

On October 22, in a theater filled with nearly 1,000 guests, 202 first-year medical students, with pristine white coats in hand, processed on stage. Thus began the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2022 White Coat Ceremony, the rite of passage which marks medical students' entrance into the medical profession. Student Clubs Provide Wide Array of Extracurricular Activities 

Students filled Doc's Café and the Hales Lobby in the Basic Sciences Building at the Annual Student Club Fair in September to learn about the many opportunities to participate in a wide range of academic, cultural, social and athletic activities on campus. Nearly 80 clubs representing career interests, community service opportunities, cultural and religious groups, campus chapters of national organizations and social and recreational activities were on hand to garner interest and attract new members. Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and School of Medicine Forge New Agreement 

The Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) and the School of Medicine (SOM) have announced a new agreement that will guarantee an admissions interview for students in several Master's programs who seek admissions to the SOM, if they meet certain performance benchmarks including MCAT scores and academic performance. The agreement covers existing and future students in the Accelerated Master's Program, two-year discipline-based Master's programs within each of the basic sciences departments and the two-year interdisciplinary Basic Medical Sciences Master's Program.

"We are proud of the rigor of our Basic Medical Science Master's programs, which provide an excellent preparation for many graduate and professional programs. We strongly believe that our students and graduates who achieved the benchmark academic criteria are outstanding candidates for our medical school program," said Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences.

"We are excited to offer this opportunity to qualified NYMC Master's students. Many of our graduate students interact with current medical students and appreciate the collaboration and collegiality that is a hallmark of the NYMC community," said Karen M. Murray, M.D. '99, associate dean of admissions for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. '11, left, associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, presented "Health Policy Strategies for Advocacy and Coalition Building" at the plenary session at the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) 5th Annual Health Policy Summit in Washington, D.C., on October 12 - 14, in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges. She was joined by Yaritzy Astudillo, School of Medicine Class of 2020, who serves as the vice president of policy of the LMSA, the student-run national nonprofit organization whose purpose is to support medical students from diverse backgrounds, increase diversity in medical education, reduce Latino health inequitiesmand advocate for the health of minority communities.

Michael S. Goligorsky, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, physiology and pharmacology and the Alvin I. Goodman Chair in Nephrology, presented the keynote address "Contribution of Vascular Endothelium to Progression of CKD" at the 3rd Annual Kidney Conference, in New York City, on October 19-20.

Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, was an invited speaker at the 59th International Symposium on "Biological Regulation and Enzyme Activity in Normal and Neoplastic Tissues." The meeting took place at the University of Bologna, Italy, on October 1-4. She presented "Targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling Pathway in Cancer." She also presented "Involvement of Tumor Suppressor p53 in Medulloblastoma Subtypes: Finding Therapeutic Targets" at the 46th Annual Meeting of International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on October 7-12.

Denise C. Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., associate professor and division director of health policy and management, presented a session, "Using Systems Thinking to Design for Health and Well-being," at the inaugural Believe in Better Project event in Duluth, Minnesota, on October 16 - 17. The meeting was designed for health care innovators and visionaries from across the country to foster new thoughts, perspectives and dialogue on health care.

Jazmine Liew, left, School of Medicine Class of 2019, presented a poster "Delayed Generalization of Ocular Myasthenia Gravis in an Adult Male" and Jacob Perlman, right, School of Medicine Class of 2019, presented a poster, "Otalgia Due to Vertebral Artery Dissection" at the 143rd Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association in Atlanta, on October 21 - 23. Their projects were initiated during their neurology clerkship. They were joined by Adam Karp, second from left, School of Medicine Class of 2019, and Robert Fekete, M.D., assistant professor of neurology and neurology clerkship director.

New York State Senator Terrence P. Murphy , right, presented Touro College of Dental Medicine (TouroCDM) at New York College with a check for $1.5 million. Ronnie Myers, D.D.S. , left, dean of the TouroCDM and professor of dental medicine, and Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A. , second from right, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, along with dental students, were on hand to accept the check.
