NYMC Celebrates 26th Annual Faculty Author Recognition

New York Medical College's (NYMC) prolific faculty authors were recognized for their published works at the 26th Annual Faculty Author Celebration, hosted by the Health Sciences Library on September 25. It was a successful year for the College's faculty authors, who collectively penned more than 800 articles, books, chapters and web publications in 2018. All of the publications' citations and abstracts were entered into Touro Scholar, the online repository of scholarship produced by all Touro College and University System (TCUS) institutions. The 2018 edition of the Faculty Publications Book of the Touro College and University System was produced as a joint effort of the Touro College Libraries and the Health Sciences Library at NYMC. 





NYMC Honored at "Westchester Doctors of Distinction"

Westfair Communications Inc., held its sixth annual Westchester Doctors of Distinction event on September 24 at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle, New York, to honor those who have had an influential impact on health care or medical science in Westchester County. The evening's keynote speaker was Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and professor of cell biology and anatomy.


NYMC Goes Gold

On September 24, the New York Medical College (NYMC) community gathered on the steps of 19 Skyline Drive-decked out in gold to show their support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Spearheaded by Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., front row, third from left, professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, and director of the Children and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Diseases Center at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, NYMC Goes Gold has become an annual tradition at the College. According to Dr. Cairo, an internationally recognized force in the fight to improve treatments for patients with childhood cancer, events like this which raise awareness are very important to the cause.


NYMC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

To mark Hispanic Heritage Month, the School of Medicine Office of Diversity and Inclusion and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan partnered to host a special presentation by Débora H. Silva, M.D., FAAP, M.Ed., center, professor of pediatrics, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, on October 3 at Metropolitan. Dr. Silva presented "Taking Care of the Puerto Rican Patient: Identity, Health Disparities, and Access to Care," comparing and contrasting health issues and disparities of Puerto Ricans residing on the island and on the mainland and examining health care access problems faced by Puerto Ricans and the effect of migration patterns since Hurricane Maria. NYMC Visits Museum of Jewish Heritage

Students and faculty from New York Medical College and the Touro College and University System joined Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., front, second from left, on September 23, for a docent-led tour of " Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away, " at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. The exhibition dedicated to the history of Auschwitz and its role in the Holocaust provided an opportunity for visitors to experience artifacts from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on view for the first time in North America, including hundreds of personal items-such as suitcases, eyeglasses and shoes-that belonged to survivors and victims of Auschwitz.

Kenneth Knapp, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Long-Term Care and Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management

ACCOLADES
Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and professor of cell biology and anatomy, was selected to join the editorial board of Communications Biology, an open-access journal publishing high quality research, reviews and commentary in all areas of the basic biological and biomedical sciences. As an editorial board member, Dr. Holz will review submissions which pertain to her areas of expertise, overseeing all aspects of the peer review process from submission to acceptance.
Jennifer L. Koestler, M.D., right, senior associate dean for medical education and associate professor of pediatrics and medicine, presented "How to Make the Most Out of Your Mentor Relationship" at the Women in Medicine Month Women's Forum at the Children's Hospital New Orleans, on September 25. She was joined by alumna Mayra Ramirez, M.D. '19, who was in the audience.
A cohort from the School of Health Sciences and Practice participated in the World Health Organization Walk the Talk in Central Park in New York City, on September 22. The four-mile walk was in celebration of health with people from all over the world on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly. From left: M.P.H. students in epidemiology, Bryan Batista, Alejandra Puerta and Aishwayra Jadhav; Elizabeth Drugge, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of epidemiology in the Department of Public Health; and Zakiya Cush, an M.P.H. student in behavioral sciences and health promotion.
