NYMC Appoints Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., FACP, FAHA, FACE, Dean of the School of Medicine

After an extensive international search, New York Medical College (NYMC) has appointed Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., FACP, FAHA, FACE, dean of the School of Medicine. An internationally-recognized expert in the field of pathogenesis of diabetes, Dr. Nadler brings to NYMC his leadership and dedication to research, innovation and education. He previously served as the Harry H. Mansbach Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and vice dean of research at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he directed the Strelitz Diabetes Center. He also served as a member of a Special Advisory Committee on Type 1 Diabetes with the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Nadler will assume his new position and join the NYMC community in March 2019.



Fine tuning the clinical skills needed to not only look, but to see, will be the focus of a special presentation hosted by the Health Sciences Library on Monday, November 5, at 5:00 p.m., in Nevins Auditorium.  Carolyn Halpin-Healy, M.A. , executive director of Arts & Minds and an educator from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will present "The Art of Observation," a discussion and reflection on art that can improve one's skills in examination, description, understanding, communication, empathy and ultimately care. 

ACCOLADES



Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, was named to City & State New York's Westchester Power 50, a list of the most influential people in Westchester County.

For her more than two decades of expertise, dedication and excellence in patient care, Barbara Tamulewicz, D.D.S. , clinical assistant professor of dental medicine, has been named a Patient Preferred Physician representing dentistry in the state of New York by Patient Preferred Physicians and Practitioners.

Gary P. Wormser, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of Division of Infectious Diseases, presented "Tick-Borne Illness, A Clinical Perspective" at the New York State Association of County Health Officials meeting in Albany, N.Y., on September 13. Dr. Wormser was also recognized with a 2018 Governor's Award for High-impact Research for his work as a co-author on "Metabolic Biomarkers for Improved Diagnosis and Prognosis of Early Lyme Disease," at the CO-LABS 10th Annual Event on October 4 at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. CO-LABS is a non-profit consortium of federal laboratories, research institutions, businesses and economic development organizations that provide financial and in-kind support for programs that promote the retention and expansion of Colorado scientific resources.


Six members of the New York Medical College community were among the honorees at the 2018 Doctors of Distinction Awards ceremony, held in Rye Brook, N.Y., on September 20.




William H. Frishman, M.D. , the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine and professor of pharmacology, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.





Tanya Dutta, M.D., M.A., clinical associate professor of medicine and assistant professor of radiology, received a Female Trailblazer Award.




Boriana Parvez, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics received a Female Trailblazer Award.




Daren Wu, M.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine, received the Caring for All Award.





Michael Grasso III, M.D., professor of urology, received the No Land Too Far Award.





Philip Maynard, School of Medicine Class of 2019, received the Promise for the Future Award.
