GSBMS Launches New M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program
 In keeping with the New York Medical College (NYMC) mission to educate outstanding health care professionals for the 21st century, the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) is launching a newly created Master of Science Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) program, making NYMC one of a few colleges in New York State to offer this unique master's degree. The Master of Science in CLS is aimed at educating and graduating exceptional clinical laboratory scientists who are required by the State of New York to earn their license prior to working in a hospital laboratory. Clinical laboratory scientists are at the heart of clinical care, performing diagnostic tests which monitor treatments and uncover new disease states, while continuously communicating with medical staff to improve patient care and treatment outcome.
The GSBMS is currently accepting applications for the program, which will encompass all areas of clinical laboratory testing: chemistry, toxicology, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, hemostasis, diagnostic immunology, clinical microbiology, histocompatibility and molecular diagnostics. CLS classes will begin in July 2019.

NYMC Takes Hard Hat Tour of Ellis Island
 Students from the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM), Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) and the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, along with leadership and faculty, took a hard hat behind the scenes tour of Ellis Island, on November 4, getting a glimpse of what it may have been like for some of the more than 12 million immigrants who passed through the United States' busiest immigrant inspection station. Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., and the group toured the historic unrestored Ellis Island Hospital complex that operated from 1902 until 1930. The visit included the infectious and contagious disease wards, kitchen facilities, laundry building, and mortuary and autopsy room, all of which played a vital role in preserving public health at the time. They also took in the "Unframed" art exhibit by renowned French artist JR, featuring historic black and white photos of Ellis Island immigrants appearing like ghosts in windows and doorways throughout the hospital complex.

HSL Hosts Special Presentation on "The Art of Observation"
 Students, faculty, administration and staff set aside their studies and work for an hour of mindful observation and reflection on November 5 at a special presentation hosted by the Health Sciences Library. Carolyn Halpin-Healy, M.A., second from left, executive director of Arts & Minds and an educator from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, led a discussion on the "The Art of Observation," showing slides of original works of art and sculpture. She encouraged the audience to look at the work, analyze it and communicate what they were seeing without making any assumptions or conclusions. The goal of the exercise was to explore ways to improve one's skills in examination, description, understanding and communication. From left: Marie T. Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, division of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, and professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, presented "Pre-Clinical Approaches to CAR NK Cell Therapy in Neuroblastoma and Sarcomas" at the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) in Washington, D.C. on November 7 - 11. He also co-chaired the session on Cell-Based Therapies for Solid Tumors.

The study was done jointly by New York Medical College and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and the Islamic Cultural Center of New York.

Jerry Halpern, D.D.S., right, clinical associate professor of dental medicine at the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College, received the Humanitarian Award at the 100th American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Scientific Meeting in Chicago on October 10. He was recognized for his work for the past eight years in treating the underserved children, orphans and medically compromised individuals in La Romana, Dominican Republic. He was congratulated by AAOMS President, Brett Fergusen, D.D.S.

 Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil, CHES, FRSPH, professor and global health director in the Department of Public Health, Division of Health Policy and Management, and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, was recognized with the Taiwan Medical Women's Association Asian Health Literacy Global Health Award for promoting human rights and health literacy at the 6th Annual Asian Health Literacy International Conference in Taichung, Taiwan, on October 25 - 27. She was also an invited speaker at the Global Health Forum in Taipei organized by the Ministry of Health on October 28 - 29, featuring 32 speakers from 32 countries and an opening by Chen Chien-jen, vice president of Taiwan. She presented "Cervical cancer and HPV in the USA."
