Mark J. Kittleson, Ph.D., has joined the faculty of NYMC's School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) as professor and chair of the newly realigned Department of Public Health. The School of Health Sciences and Practice created the new Department of Public Health to integrate the public health areas of concentration, among them behavioral health sciences, biostatistics, emergency preparedness, environmental health science, epidemiology, global health, health care administration, health education, health policy and management, and industrial hygiene. The department also has become, for purposes of accreditation, NYMC's entire public health "program" that currently has full accreditation through 2022.

Dr. Kittleson was selected for the position following a national search that included many qualified candidates. He most recently served as dean of the School of Health and Human Performance at SUNY Brockport, a school with some of the largest majors at the college including nursing, kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education (KSSPE), public health and health education, healthcare studies and recreation and leisure studies. Read more...

The 14th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Professorship and Research Day, set for Wednesday, December 13, will feature prominent trauma surgeon, George C. Velmahos, M.D., Ph.D., M.S.Ed., as the keynote speaker. The day will showcase moderated poster rounds, podium presentations of scientific papers and the distinguished visiting professor lecture, "Selective Nonoperative Management of Gunshot Wounds to the Abdomen: From Heresy to New Religion," by Dr. Valmahos. The event was established in 2002 to honor the late Dr. Del Guercio's leadership and pioneering research during his 24-year tenure as chairman of the Department of Surgery, and to stimulate and promote surgical research at NYMC. Abstracts by students, residents or fellows at NYMC and/or affiliated institutions addressing clinical, educational, translational and/or basic research questions pertaining to surgery or surgical subspecialties are being accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, November 20. Peter Q. Warinner, M.D. '97, adjunct assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at NYMC, proudly displays the plaque of appreciation he received for his 18 years of lectures and spinal tap demonstrations in the medical microbiology course. The School of Medicine Class of 2020, in the background, was grateful for the opportunity to hear him present "Neurotropic Pathogens" on November 9. Dr. Warinner is the founder and inaugural director of the Sports Neurology and Concussion Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Brigham and Women's/Mass General Health Care Center and instructor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. He is the author of several books, including Clinical Microbiology Review, which he wrote while he was in medical school. Dr. Warinner is also a health care policy expert consultant who works with private and governmental organizations and agencies on state, national and federal levels.

Parthener Pinder, M.D., an M.P.H. candidate in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, recently participated in the 32nd Council of International Fellowship (CIF) International Conference 2017 held in September in Kalamata, Greece. The CIF is a not-for-profit global organization formed in 1960 stemming from the Council of International Programs (CIP) and the Council of International Programs U.S.A. (CIPUSA). With more than 30 national branches worldwide, CIF's goal is to "promote international understanding and world peace through training and exchange of experience for professionals in human services." Students and faculty members of Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College (TCDM) gathered on October 17 for the school's inaugural research presentations. Five first-year dental students spent their summer in an optional research elective at NYMC. "If your mind is inquisitive, you should ask questions and find answers," stated Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., Touro College and University System provost for biomedical research and chief biomedical research officer, TCDM professor of dental medicine and NYMC professor of professor of pharmacology and microbiology and immunology.
