School of Medicine Announces New Chairmen
D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., NYMC dean of the School of Medicine, is pleased to announce three new appointments in the School of Medicine, from left:
Augustine Moscatello, M.D., chairman of the NYMC School of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology;
Meic H. Schmidt, M.D., M.B.A., chairman of the NYMC School of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery; and
John Andrew 'Jack' Cooley, M.D., acting chair of the NYMC School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology. "After competitive national searches, the School of Medicine is very pleased to have recruited such strong academic and clinical leaders. Clinical department chairs have critical roles in academic medicine - fostering the success of their faculty members and bridging key programs with our teaching hospital partners," said Dr. Miller. "We are fortunate to have these gifted individuals on the School's leadership team."

Four Members of the NYMC Community Are Selected for NYAM Fellowship
The New York Academy of Medicine held its prestigious annual awards ceremony for distinguished contributions by individuals in health policy, public health, clinical practice, biomedical research at the 169th Anniversary Discourse and Awards on November 3 at the Academy in New York City. Among the evening's honorees were newly inducted fellows, from left:

NYMC and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Honor Doctor and War Hero Mathew Francis Olstein, M.D.
A reflective ceremony was held on November 7 at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City to honor the legacy of Mathew F. Olstein, M.D., a physician and World War I hero who transcended an anti-Semitic attack during his medical residency at Kings County Hospital in 1916 to then become an intern and senior physician at Metropolitan Hospital.
College and hospital leadership led the dedication ceremony and unveiled a plaque honoring Dr. Olstein during the week of Veterans Day and one week after Dr. Olstein's memorial anniversary, or what is known in Hebrew as Yahrzeit. Among the speakers were, from left:

Gary P. Wormser, M.D., Lauded for 30+ Years of Micro Lectures
Jan Geliebter, Ph.D., right, professor of microbiology and immunology and otolaryngology and course director for medical microbiology, expressed his thanks and appreciation to
Gary P. Wormser, M.D., professor of medicine and pharmacology, chief of Division of Infectious Diseases and vice chairman of Department of Medicine, for his dedication in lecturing for more than 30 years in the medical microbiology course. The plaque presentation took place prior to Dr. Wormser's lecture on HIV/AIDS on November 7. Dr. Wormser is the director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program and director and founder of the Lyme Disease Diagnostic Center. His research interests include Lyme disease, HIV infection, infection control, investigational antimicrobial agents and vaccine preparations. He is a co-author of the original description of AIDS appearing in the
New England Journal of Medicine in 1981 and serves on the editorial boards of
Clinical Infectious Diseases, Vector Borne and Zoonotic Diseases and
Archives of Medical Science. He has edited one of the leading textbooks on AIDS now in its fourth edition and has authored more than 350 published papers, including 20 publications in the
New England Journal of Medicine alone.

New York Medical College was well-represented at the American Public Health Association (APHA) 2016 Annual Meeting and Expo held in Denver, October 29 - November 2.

Chia-Ching Chen, M.A., M.S., Ed.D., CHES, professor of public health practice, epidemiology and community health and director of the health education program, received the Nobuo Maeda International Research Award from the 2016 APHA Aging and Public Health Section. The award recognized her work, "Substitution of formal and informal healthcare among retired population in Japan: Implication for social and public health policy," an examination of the decision-making preferences of long-term healthcare use (formal homecare, informational homecare, nursing homecare) among the retired population using a large national household survey in Japan. The contributions of the study demonstrate an innovative approach that has a significant impact on social and public health policy initiatives among the ever-increasing aging population. She also presented "Health literacy among college students: Perspectives, Challenges, and Concerns."

Penny Liberatos, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., assistant professor of epidemiology and community health, and director, M.P.H. Studies Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion, presented "Herbal and pharmaceutical galactagogue use among breastfeeding mothers with low milk supply."

Agustina Lopez Novillo, M.P.H., assistant director, public health practicum, presented "An Academic/Practice Partnership that advances access and a right to health: The Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley."

Michael Tarr, School of Medicine Class of 2019, presented "Virtual Grand Rounds in Intellectual/Developmental Disability: An Interprofessional Case Study Forum of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry."

Five residents in the NYMC General Dental Practice Residency Program, Caroline Inaba, D.D.S., Amanda Yee, D.M.D., Timothy Wen, D.D.S., Puja Patel, D.D.S., and Melissa Mondesir, D.M.D., attended sessions focused on the social determinants of health as they affect access and utilization of oral health services at the APHA Annual Meeting. They attended the conference as part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant which includes a focus on public health awarded to Joseph F. Morales, D.D.S., professor of clinical dental medicine and chairman of the SOM Department of Dental Medicine, in collaboration with three faculty members in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, Barbara Greenberg, M.Sc., Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, Denise C. Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil, Ph.D., associate professor of public health practice and director, M.P.H. Studies, and Penny Liberatos, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D. The conference sessions illustrated and reinforced the importance of taking a systems approach to tackle the challenges and reinforced the concept that context matters. The residents appreciated the opportunity to learn about the impact of social determinants of health on medical care as well as oral health.
