Amy S. Kahn Named Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs
|
Amy S. Kahn has been named vice president for development and alumni affairs, leading the College's comprehensive advancement program, including philanthropic development, major gifts, annual fund and alumni relations as well as special campaigns. In this role, Ms. Kahn will be responsible for creating and implementing the strategic plan to meet the College's advancement goals and will oversee the development and alumni relations teams. Ms. Kahn's experience includes more than a decade of development work at Northwestern University, starting at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences in 1999 and ultimately directing development for student life and scholarships and focusing on university-wide priorities. Since 2013, Ms. Kahn has served as vice president of development at the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
Ms. Kahn earned her B.S. in business administration at the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Ms. Kahn reports to Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer.

Two new clients of BioInc@NYMC, have taken occupancy in the biotechnology incubator at 7 Dana Road: SHY Therapeutics, a therapeutic product research company, and MediSprout, a telehealth solution company.

Three High School Students Named Siemens Competition Semi-Finalists
|
Three New York-area high school students--
Yasir Khan, Jaysen Zhang
and
Laura Pellegrino
, all mentorees of NYMC faculty members--were recently named semi-finalists in the
Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology
, the nation's premier science research competition. The 2015 Siemens Competition received more than 1,700 submissions from which 466 semi-finalists were named. Jaysen Zhang (Great Neck South High School, Great Neck, N.Y.) and Laura Pellegrino (School of the Holy Child, Rye, N.Y.) were STAR (Summer Trainees in Academic Research) Program participants at NYMC, who worked with Joseph M. Wu, Ph.D., professor, and vice chairman and M.S. program director, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Tze-chen Hsieh, research associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology on a project, "Resveratrol Derivatives as Novel Activators and Inhibitors of Sirtuin 5 (Sirt5)."

professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Science, received a one-year $325,365 continuation sub-award from Rutgers, State University of New Jersey for "CounterAct Research Center of E
xcellence." The funds originate from the National Institutes of Health.
Gary P. Wormser, M.D.,
professor of medicine, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and vice chairman of the Department of Medicine, received a
$123,256 renewal sub-award from Tufts University for "Searching for Persistence in Lyme Disease." The funds originate from the National Institutes of Health.

Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, chaired the session "Brain Tumor," at the World Congress on Advances in Oncology and International Symposium on Molecular Medicine held on October 10 in Athens, Greece. She also presented "Targeting Glioblastoma and Its Stem Cells Using Novel Small Molecule Inhibitors of the mTOR Pathway."
Kathryn E. McGoldrick, MD, FCAI(Hon),
professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, delivered an invited Refresher Course Lecture to an audience of approximately 500 anesthesiologists at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists held in San Diego in late October. She was also recently inducted as a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
