Center for Disaster Medicine Hosts "Mass Casualty Events and 'Stop the Bleeding'" Symposium
 More than 100 first responders, law enforcement officials, healthcare leaders, business leaders, school officials and members of the community took part in the "Mass Casualty Events and 'Stop the Bleeding'" symposium presented by the Center for Disaster Medicine on November 13. Experts in the field shared how to prepare for mass casualty events, the evidence and educational approaches to support "Stop the Bleeding," the latest approaches and lessons learned in the field. It was the first of a quarterly symposium series offered by the Center for Disaster Medicine.

School of Medicine Alumni Association Hosts Annual Reunion
 It was a fun-filled weekend for more than 160 School of Medicine (SOM) alumni and their guests at the SOM Alumni Association Reunion on November 10 - 11. Members of the classes of 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013, reunited for an evening of dining, dancing and camaraderie on Saturday evening at Double Tree Hilton in Tarrytown, N.Y., followed by a brunch, campus tour and a continuing medical education lecture by William H. Frishman, M.D., the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine and professor of pharmacology, who presented "The Women's Health Initiative."

Department of Pediatrics and the Children's Health and Research Foundation Hosts Eighth Annual Assistant Professor Pediatric Research Symposium
 The Eighth Annual Assistant Professor Pediatric Research Symposium, hosted by the Department of Pediatrics and the Children's Health and Research Foundation, Inc., on November 7 at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, featured abstracts in an oral platform session in basic, clinical, quality and translational research areas in the field of pediatrics, followed by a general poster session. NYMC Helps Move the Needle Forward in Developing Anti-Chemical Warfare Drugs
 Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., professor of public health and associate dean for research in the School of Health Sciences and Practice and director of pharmacology and drug development at the UMDNJ-Rutgers University CounterACT Research Center of Excellence, has announced a step forward in the effort to develop an antidote to sulfur mustard, the chemical weapon more commonly known as mustard gas. Working in conjunction with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and Janssen Pharmaceutical, CounterACT has advanced its biopharmaceutical drug products aimed at limiting lung injury resulting from exposure to mustard gas to preclinical drug trials.

NYMC Hosts Fourth Annual Human Rights Institute for Middle School Student Leaders
 NYMC was pleased to host the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center's Fourth Annual Human Rights Institute for Middle School Student Leaders on campus on November 8, 13 and 15. More than 300 seventh grade students and 18 high school facilitators from area schools, both public and private, attended presentations and workshops with the themes "Respecting the Individual" and "How to Be an Upstander" to focus on the importance of confronting prejudice and discrimination. Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, welcomed the youngsters to campus. A highlight of the event was a special presentation by Sheila Arnold, chief executive officer and lead performer of History's Alive!, who portrayed Betsy Costner, a 19th century slave who was freed after the Civil War.

Keosha T. Bond, Ed.D., M.P.H., CHES, assistant professor of public health, presented "Knowledge, Indications, and Willingness to Take Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Among an Online Sample of Black Women" at the 2018 Association of Nurses in AIDS Care conference in Denver on November 8 - 10. Dr. Bond also received the Best Scientific Abstract Award at the 2018 International Conference on Stigma, "Bridging Research, Community and Practice" at Howard University in Washington D.C., on November 16. She presented "Race-Based Stereotypes, Stigma, and Sexual Decision Making among Young Heterosexual African American Women."

Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, and co-investigator Gary P. Wormser, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of Division of Infectious Diseases, received a two-year $246,000 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' (NIAID) Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation Research (DAIT) for "Tafenoquine as a Potential Revolutionary Treatment for Babesiosis."
