Accessibility Awareness and Education Lecture Focuses on Diabetes for National Diabetes Awareness Month
As part of its Accessibility Awareness and Education Lecture Series, the Office of Academic Support hosted a special presentation on diabetes by
Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., MACP, FAHA, FACE, seventh from left, dean of the School of Medicine and professor of medicine and pharmacology. Dr. Nadler, an internationally recognized diabetes physician-researcher who is working to determine if a vaccine could prevent Type 1 diabetes, shared his expertise on the disease that is expected to affect 629 million people worldwide by the year 2045 according to the International Diabetes Federation.

School of Medicine Alumni Association Hosts Annual Reunion
It was a weekend of reminiscing with old friends and classmates for 150 School of Medicine (SOM) alumni and their guests at the SOM Alumni Association Annual Reunion on November 16 - 17. Members of the Classes of 1959 through 2014, reunited for an evening of dining, dancing and camaraderie on Saturday evening at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, New York, followed by brunch and campus tours on Sunday. Special recognition was given to the Class of 1969 as they were presented with gold diplomas to celebrate their 50th anniversary of graduating from medical school. Judith Kupersmith, M.D. '69, and Joel Kupersmith, M.D. '64, were presented with Alumni Association Medals of Honor for their accomplished careers and their desires to inspire as physicians, mentors and leaders.

StuHE Hosts Career Mentor Session
The Student Healthcare Executives Club (StuHE) in the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) hosted another successful Career Mentor Session on the evening of November 12. The Skyline Dining Room was buzzing with intense discussions among the more than 50 SHSP students and alumni and 18 public health professionals. Best described as "speed mentoring," students and alumni met one-on-one with mentors who reviewed their resumes and provided guidance and advice on career paths in public health.

Nader G. Abraham, Ph.D., DR.H.C., FAHA, far left, professor of medicine and pharmacology, presented "Human Heme Oxygenase Gene Therapy as a Treatment for Obesity-mediate Cardiovascular Disease" at the 2019 Meeting of the Israeli Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ISGCT 2019) at Tel-Aviv University, Israel on October 7. The research he presented was conducted with six members of the School of Medicine Class of 2022 whom he mentors, from left, David Lewis, Yosef D. Buchen, Jeffrey N. Baum, Menachem Greenberg, Yosef Glick, and Rochelle Rubinstein.
Dr. Abraham was also an Invited Influential Speaker at the Third International Conference on Food Science and Technology in London, on November 11-12. He presented a keynote talk "Beneficial Effects of Thymoquinone on Metabolic Function." Dr. Abraham received special recognition for his esteemed support as a member of the organizing committee for the conference and for chairing the sessions on Food Metabolism and Clinical Syndrome, Molecular Food and Nutrition, Food Safety-The Rising Crisis and its Management and Nutritional Food.

Juan Azcona, a Ph.D. candidate in the laboratory of Austin M. Guo, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, presented a poster "Novel Contributions of Neutrophil-derived Myeloperoxidase and Hypochlorous Acid to Post-Ischemic Endothelial 20-HETE Production" at the 16th International Conference on Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation and Related Diseases in St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 20-23. Mr. Azcona was the recipient of the Springer Nature Travel Award.

George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, EMTP, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was an invited speaker at the First National Congress on the Humanization of Emergency Medical Services in Oviedo, Spain, on November 8. He presented "The Importance of Adding Empathy to Patient Care During Disasters," and gave an update on the ongoing work of the Center for Disaster Medicine. He was also an invited speaker at the First National Convention of Tactical Emergency Medical Services in Miranda de Ebro, Spain, on November 9. He presented "The Long Term Psychological Effects of Large Scale Disasters on First Responders."

Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, was invited to give a talk, "Novel Molecular Subgroups of Medulloblastoma in Prediction of Clinical Outcome in the Era of Precision Medicine" in the neuro-oncology course assigned to the advanced surgical management section at the 47th annual meeting of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery, in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on October 18 - 24. She also presented "Status of Tumor Suppressor P53 Defines the Therapeutic Responses in Treatment of Medulloblastoma."
