SOM Class of 2023 Marks Medical School Milestone: The White Coat Ceremony
The largest class of medical students in the history of New York Medical College (NYMC)--the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2023--celebrated its White Coat Ceremony on October 28, at the Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York. More than 1,000 guests watched as 217 first-year medical students processed into the auditorium and onto the stage-- thus began the right-of-passage ceremony, considered the symbolic beginning of the four-year journey of medical school and entry into the medical profession.

BioInc@NYMC Celebrates Five-Year Anniversary and Expansion
Government officials, local community leaders and other stakeholders joined New York Medical College (NYMC) on October 30 to celebrate a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the five-year anniversary and expansion of BioInc@NYMC. The expansion of the fully-equipped biotechnology incubator adds an additional 9,500 square feet of new offices, conference rooms, shared-space desks and collaborative space. Since 2014, BioInc@NYMC has created more than 54 jobs, supported nine start-up companies, and with it's newly expanded space, will allow for the incubation of up to 20 additional companies at the forefront of medical innovation.

Enriching medical students' understanding of accessibility constraints in health care, the New York Medical College (NYMC) Office of Academic Support hosted Spotlight on Autism on October 24, part of the Accessibility Awareness and Education Lecture Series. The lecture featured keynote speaker,

NYMC Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Members of the New York Medical College community joined
Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., holding sign, dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, and guests from the American Cancer Society, Inc., for a group photo on October 29 to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Dr. Holz is an American Cancer Society Research Scholar and leads a laboratory studying the mechanisms of signaling by hormones and growth factors in breast cancer.

Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. '11, left, associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and Innes Tounkel, School of Medicine Class of 2021, presented "Women Speak Out: Female Genital Cutting" at the Fifth Annual Health Disparities Symposium on October 24 at NYU Langone Health in New York City. Dr. Clare also received the 2019 Adopt a Junior Fellow Mentor Award at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District II annual meeting in New York City on October 18.

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, presented a keynote lecture, "Expertise In Radiation Oncology: Who Has It And Who Defines It?" at the 51st Annual Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology in Lyon, France, on October 23-26. He also co-chaired a session on radiobiology.

Denise C. Tahara, Ph.D., associate professor and division director of health policy and management, was an organizer of the New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) Fall Conference, "Public Health Impact: Cannabis, E-Cigarettes and Vaping," in Rye, New York, on October 17. Dr. Tahara is vice president of NYSPHA.

Tiffany Wong, School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2022, and Yung Chan, SOM Class of 2023, were selected to serve as delegate and alternate delegate, respectively, for the 2020 annual meeting of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) House of Delegates. Their role is to provide testimony on the floor of the House for resolutions for policy and vote in elections for various MSSNY positions.

Rebecca Yang, SOM Class of 2022, and Kevin Hill, SOM Class of 2021, participated in the Rutgers Global Health Symposium at Rutgers, on October 23. Ms. Yang earned first place for her abstract, "Sleep-wake Cycles in Refugee Children with Resignation Syndrome," and Mr. Hill won third place for "Characteristics of Management of Chronic Pain in the Palajunoj Valley of Guatemala."

Students from the School of Medicine and the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College participated in a health fair at the Grasslands VOA Homeless Shelter on October 24. The event was co-hosted by NYMC's Psychiatry Interest Group and the American Medical Student Association. Supervised by faculty, students offered mental health screenings, substance use counseling, nutrition counseling, lifestyle and fitness information and dental screenings and Westchester Medical Center's AIDS Care Clinic provided HIV testing and counseling. More than 50 residents of the shelter participated.
