SOM Launches Bench-to-Bedside Seminar Series

The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine, in conjunction with Westchester Medical Center, has launched a Bench-to-Bedside Seminar Series to address issues in translational medicine. The first seminar in the series, "Transplantation Tolerance," was presented on November 29 at Westchester Medical Center. Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., left, provost for biomedical research and chief biomedical research officer, Touro College and University System, director of the Office of Research Administration and professor of pharmacology and microbiology and immunology at NYMC, and professor of dental medicine, Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, welcomed guest speaker David H. Sachs, M.D., professor of surgery, Columbia University Medical Center, and professor of surgery emeritus, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Sachs discussed the need for transplantation tolerance, examined animal models of tolerance through hematopoietic chimerism and assessed the current status of clinical trials and tolerance.

Student Services Announces New Positions

The Office of Student Services is pleased to announce the promotions of, from left, Eileen Romero to campus registrar; Jessica Ready-Jackson to assistant registrar; and Karin Ahyoung to campus bursar. Ms. Romero had been serving as interim campus registrar since July. She joined the College in 1990 in the Office of the Registrar where she remained except for a brief time when she worked in the Office of Development. Ms. Ready-Jackson joined NYMC in 2007 as the medical school coordinator in the Office of the Registrar and was promoted to senior coordinator in 2014. Ms. Ahyoung had been acting campus bursar since January. She came to the College in 2002 in accounts payable where she worked until 2005 when she moved to general accounting. She joined the Office of the Bursar in 2012 as senior account coordinator.

ACCOLADES
Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. '11, associate dean of diversity and inclusion in the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was honored with the Champion of Education Award at the 12th Annual Mavis and Ephraim Hawthorne Gala, held at the VIP Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y., on November 10.
Stephen Ferrando, M.D., right, the Har Esh professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, joined Joel Seligman, president and chief executive officer of Northwell-Northern Westchester Hospital and adjunct professor of health policy and management in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, and Stephanie Marquesano, founder and president of the Harris Project, in an expert panel discussion on linking mental health services with opioid abuse prevention programs, at a special session of the Westchester County Association Board of Directors, held at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., on December 7.

Michal L. Schwartzman, Ph.D., above left, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, professor of medicine and associate professor of ophthalmology, was invited as a plenary lecturer at the 15th International Conference on Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation, and Related Diseases, held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in October. Dr. Schwartzman presented "20-HETE, its Receptor and its role in Cardiovascular Diseases." Austin M. Guo, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, presented a poster, "Inflammatory Neutrophils Contribute to 20-HETE Regulation of Ischemia-Induced Angiogenesis." In Dr. Schwartzman's capacity as editor-in-chief of the journal, Prostaglandins and Other Lipid Mediators (POLM), she also presented three POLM Young Investigator Travel Awards.

GRANT NEWS
Doris J. Bucher, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology and pediatrics, received a 2.5-year $1,072,035 grant for "High Yield (High Growth) Reassortant Seed Influenza Viruses: Accelerating Production of Types A and B Candidate Vaccine Viruses with Maximal Yield, Determining their Molecular Signatures and Antigen Quantitation by UPLC" from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
