Summer Fellowship Pays Off in the Form of Published Research

Third-year medical student Mohammad Ahmed, left, makes it look easy. In the summer of 2014, after his first year of medical school, Mr. Ahmed began working with Joseph Wu, Ph.D., right, professor and vice chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as part of a summer fellowship awarded by the Office of Student Affairs. This effort led -- not only to knowledge gained and lessons learned -- but also to a second place award in the clinical science poster division at NYMC's 2015 Medical Student Research Forum, which likewise inspired the submission of a paper to the International Journal of Molecular Medicine

NYMC Serves Up International Food and Handicrafts

Clockwise from front left: Norah Alruwaili, M.S. student in the Department of Physiology; Pamela Cunningham, assistant director prospect management and donor records; Jun Qin, M.D., visiting scientist in the Department of Physiology;
Sharath Kandhi, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Physiology; and Elizabeth Ward, international student and scholar advisor.
The BSB lobby was bustling on December 2 when NYMC welcomed HandCrafting Justice, Inc. for a fair trade holiday handcraft sale and the NYMC chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) held its bi-annual International Food Festival. The sale of handcrafted items, sponsored by the International Student and Scholar Association, raised more than $1,100 for women's groups in Africa, Asia and Latin America to support and encourage justice, empowerment and sustainability. The International Food Festival raised money which SNMA will use for the establishment of summer programs, scholarships and campus events.
P2P Committee Recognizes Role Models at NYMC

This holiday season, the
School of Medicine Peer to Peer (P2P) Committee is celebrating the exemplary students of NYMC. Students are making a difference all the time -- whether it's spending extra time to help teach others a challenging concept or listening to a patient's concerns and taking steps to allay them -- NYMC students are active contributing members of this community. The Professionals of NYMC awards are given to students who embody the school's core graduation competencies, including outstanding acts of patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, collaboration and professionalism.
These students are nominated by fellow classmates and are recognized for demonstrating attributes and values that we all aspire to have as future physicians.  Read more about the December 2015 Professionals of NYMC...
