NYMC Kicks Off Black History Month With Movie Screening
To mark Black History Month, New York Medical College and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Student National Medical Association, hosted a screening and discussion of Power to Heal, a documentary of the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans and how Medicare was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country in a matter of months. Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., right, chancellor and chief executive officer, and Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. '11, left, associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, welcomed guest speaker Barbara Berney, Ph.D., M.P.H., the producer and project creator of Power to Heal. Dr. Berney, associate professor of health policy and management, CUNY School of Public Health, and a distinguished scholar in public health, environmental justice and the U.S. health care system, was inspired to produce the film after hearing first-hand accounts of physicians, nurses and government staffers involved in the integration effort and those who struggled to provide health services in rural areas lacking the most basic medical care.
