NYMC Celebrates Grand Opening of the Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M. Asprinio Fitness Center

NYMC is in the business of health: bringing compassionate care and sound health to patients, communities, the region and populations across the world. On Wednesday, February 17, the gift of health and wellness was given back to the College, by David E. Asprinio, M.D. , chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and professor of clinical orthopedic surgery, and the NYMC Board of Advisors whose generous donations supported the building of the Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M. Twentieth Annual Medical Student Research Forum Showcases Abundance of Investigative Works

 The Medical Education Center lobby was overflowing with student poster presentations - 38 to be exact - at the 20th Annual Medical Student Research Forum on February 11. Following the poster presentations in the basic science and clinical science categories, five students presented their research orally. The keynote address was delivered by renowned exercise scientist
Lee Jones, Ph.D.,
an attending physiologist in the Department of Medicine and director of the Cardio-Oncology Research Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who presented "Exercise for Treatment of Cancer: A Translational Approach." Dr. Jones shared his work on investigating the efficacy of target exercise training to mitigate cancer therapy-associated cardiovascular injury and inhibit growth and progression of the disease. Mary M. Petzke, Ph.D., is Named Director of Medical Student Research

Mary M. Petzke, Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology and immunology and the founding director of the
Summer Trainees in Academic Research (STAR)
Program, has been appointed director of medical student research to support research mentoring for NYMC medical students and contribute to the development of a biomedical research area of concentration in the M.D. program. In her new role, Dr. Petzke will be responsible for: increasing the number of opportunities for medical students to participate in mentored research; reviewing student and faculty evaluations of research mentorship; aligning research opportunities to the curriculum for medical education; and enhancing campus-wide awareness of research opportunities through activities such as a medical student research day and the publication of medical student research abstracts.
"I enthusiastically welcome this exciting opportunity to develop mission-critical programming for the School of Medicine," said Dr. Petzke. "Mentored research fosters productive collaborations between students and faculty, provides our physicians-in-training with solid basic science knowledge and encourages the regular practice of clinical investigation."
Dr. Petzke, who joined the NYMC faculty in 2010, will continue to serve on the STAR steering committee and continue her research on cellular and molecular innate immune responses to bacterial infections, especially Lyme disease; mechanisms of immune subversion; and the use of functional genomics to profile the complex interactions occurring at the host/pathogen interface.

NYMC Promotes Brain Health Awareness

fifth from left, adjunct assistant professor of neurology and advisory dean for the Burgess-Holley House, and medical students hosted a community education event on January 18 at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, N.Y. The group shared information on optimizing brain health through exercise, diet and sleep and also addressed the topics of concussion, epilepsy, stroke and dementia. Community members who have personal experience with sports concussions served as patient ambassadors.
