Thirty-Second Annual Graduate Student Research Forum is Set for March 17
The 32nd Annual Graduate Student Research Forum, sponsored by the Graduate Student Association in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, is set for Tuesday, March 17. This year's forum welcomes alum Anton M. Bennett, Ph.D. '93, back to campus as the keynote speaker. Dr. Bennett, the Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Pharmacology and Professor of Comparative Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, will present, "Let the Data Take You Where it May -- A Journey of Studying Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases in Disease." Dr. Bennett also serves as co-director of the program in integrative cell signaling and neurobiology of metabolism and director of minority affairs for the graduate program in biological biomedical sciences at Yale. Conference Addresses Current Topics in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Pediatric health care providers from the Hudson Valley and surrounding area gathered at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital on January 11 for the Fifth Annual Current Topics in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Conference, hosted by the School of Medicine and Westchester Medical Center Health Network and directed by Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., far left, professor of pediatrics, division of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, and professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy. Marietta Lee, Ph.D., left, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Zhongtao Zhang, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, received a one-year grant continuation in the amount of $262,250 for "Modification of DNA Polymerase Delta by a Novel Mechanism During Replication Stress" from the National Institutes of Health.

2020 is a leap year. In leap years past, great things have happened at NYMC:
- 1860: NYMC is founded.
- 1872: The College moves to its new location in the recently opened facilities of the New York Ophthalmic Hospital on 23rd Street and Third Avenue.
- 1888: The cornerstone is laid for a new College building and the associated Flower Hospital on East 64th Street.
- 1928: Walter Gray Crump, M.D., Class of 1895, professor of surgery, establishes the first scholarship for African-American students at a majority-white medical school.
- 1940: The College awards its first basic science graduate degrees at Commencement as part of a new program which allowed students to earn a master's degree in a basic science along with their M.D.
- 1960: The College celebrates its centennial.
- 1972: NYMC moves to Valhalla.
- 1984: The Alumni House is renovated.
- 2016: The Valhalla campus expands with the opening of the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, the Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M. Asprinio Fitness Center and a driveway connecting the main campus with 19 Skyline Drive.
