Mary M. Petzke, Ph.D., is Appointed Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research
Mary M. Petzke, Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology and immunology and the founding director of the Summer Trainees in Academic Research (STAR) Program, has been appointed assistant dean for medical student research. She previously served as director of medical student research and is the assistant course director for the medical microbiology course in the School of Medicine (SOM). In her new role, she will continue to support research mentoring for medical students and direct the biomedical research area of concentration in the M.D. program. Dr. Petzke is responsible for significantly increasing opportunities for medical students to participate in mentored biomedical research; reviewing student and faculty evaluations of research mentorship; aligning research opportunities to the curriculum; and enhancing campus-wide awareness of research opportunities. SHSP Hosts Seminar on "HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program"
 The School of Health Sciences and Practice hosted a seminar, "HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program," on January 30, as part of its spring seminar series. The Health Research Training Program (HRTP) of the New York City Department of Health is one of the oldest and largest public health traineeships in the country, providing opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to work on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals and apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum. Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research, professor of pharmacology and microbiology and immunology at New York Medical College (NYMC), provost for biomedical research and chief biomedical research officer for Touro College and University System, and professor of dental medicine at Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, presented "The Role of the Oral Microbiome in Health and Diseases" at a virtual roundtable of the Consortium on Translational Research in the Microbiome, on January 25. Dr. Amar is a member of the steering committee of the Consortium, a partnership between the Institute of Life Science Entrepreneurship, the City University of New York and the Westchester Biotech Project, focused on facilitating the implementation of microbiome research to enhance drug discovery and development.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, was appointed to the LAM Foundation Scientific Advisory Board for a three-year term. The LAM Foundation is the global leader in the fight against lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), through advocacy and the funding of promising research.
