NYMC and Touro Host Educational Event on Coronavirus

In light of the growing global concern about the novel coronavirus and the emergence of the new cases in the United States, the New York Medical College (NYMC) Center for Disaster Medicine and the Touro College and University System (TCUS) hosted an informational event on January 31, "Coronavirus: What we know, what we don't know, and what you need to know." The event took place at the Touro College Midtown Manhattan campus to shed light on the virus and inform health care professionals and the public on the novel coronavirus origins, transmission, symptoms and how to manage infectious disease outbreaks. Nearly 200 health care leaders, elected officials, media representatives and members of the public turned out for the event or tuned in to the live stream to learn more about the global threat. BioInc@NYMC Hosts Science and Entrepreneurship Seminar

Deborah Novick, director of BioInc@NYMC, and Barry Kappel, Ph.D., chief executive officer and founder of Sapience Therapeutics, co-presented "Science and Entrepreneurship" on January 28. The special seminar discussed the process of turning research discoveries into actual therapeutics and how to achieve this as a scientist. Key features of the presentation included an overview of how to position a biotech startup for success and the pros and cons of persuing an M.B.A. degree. Sapience Therapeutics, a BioInc@NYMC client, is focused on discovering and developing peptide-based therapeutics for major unmet medical needs, specifically high-mortality cancers.
