Match Day 2018: An Impressive Day for the School of Medicine Class of 2018

In the early hours of March 16, the Medical Education Center lobby was deceptively quiet, empty of student activity-the calm before the storm known as Match Day 2018. By noon, the lobby was brimming with a boisterous crowd of 200 senior medical students, who were flanked by friends and family, as they opened envelopes that revealed their residency match results from the National Resident Matching Program. It was the largest match on record with almost 44,000 registered applicants and more than 33,000 positions offered. View the 2018 Match Day photo gallery and News 12 Westchester coverage. Richard White, M.D., Ph.D., to Address 30th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum

Physician-scientist, oncologist and self-proclaimed zebrafish-ologist, Richard White, M.D., Ph.D., is set to give the keynote address at the 30th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum on Tuesday, March 20. Dr. White, who is head of the Richard White Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will present "What Do Fish Tell Us About Human Cancer?"  His research focuses on cancer metastasis in a transparent strain of zebrafish they have dubbed "Casper." The transparent nature of the fish, as well as its ability to develop cancer in a manner similar to humans, has allowed unprecedented imaging of how tumors interact with their surrounding microenvironment and its properties allow for the investigation of thousands of potential drugs that could be used to treat metastasis in a way that cannot be done in other laboratory settings. Department of Public Health Seminar Addresses the Rohingya Crisis

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen, second from left, presented "The Rohingya Crisis: What Lies Ahead?" He shared his firsthand experience about what is being done to help the largest refugee situation in the world of Rohingyas who have fled their homes in Myanmar's Rakhine State to Bangladesh after persecution and atrocity crimes by the national security forces and local vigilante groups. Now living in camps after suffering from starvation, denial of basic or emergency health care, access to any livelihood option and sexual violence and enslavement of women and girls, their plight has become a public health nightmare. Welcoming Ambassador Masud Bin Momen to New York Medical College were, from left: Ben C. Watson, Ph.D., vice dean, School of Health Sciences and Practice; Hasanat Alamgir, M.B.A., Ph.D., associate professor of public health in the Division of Health Policy and Management, vice chair for doctoral studies, co-director of the Center for Long-Term Care; and Mark J.
