Lori Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, Is Named Associate Dean for Community Health Affairs for the School of Medicine

Lori Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, assistant professor of family and community medicine, has been appointed associate dean for community health affairs for the School of Medicine (SOM). In her role, in the newly created SOM Community Health Affairs Office, Dr. Solomon will manage the community-based portfolio of SOM programs, including public projects, private initiatives and public-private partnerships and liaise effectively with community-based partners. She will coordinate community-based SOM impact studies (i.e., national community-based medical school rankings, state physician workforce, regional economic impact, etc.) and in conjunction with the senior associate dean for academic administration and the clinical chairs ad hoc sub-committee, she will co-develop the three year operating plan and budget for a new primary care-focused SOM faculty practice plan. 28th Annual GSRF Highlights Impressive Student Research

Twenty-nine students in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences were proud to show off their reseach at the 28th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum on March 15. Sponsored by the Graduate Student Association, the event featured poster and oral presentations by graduate students and a keynote address by Patrick Sung, Ph.D., far right, professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and of therapeutic radiology at Yale University School of Medicine, who presented "The Role of the BRCA2-DSS1 Complex in DNA Break Repair." Dr. Sung's research focuses on mechanisms associated with homology-directed repair of DNA double-strand breaks in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and in mammalian cells. Read more...

Town Hall Meeting Introduces NYMC TouroOne Student Portal

In what he referred to as a "tremendous collective effort," David Raab, left, executive vice president, Touro College and University System (TCUS), introduced the NYMC community to the final stage of the TouroOne integration project, the Student Module, at a Town Hall Meeting on March 16. Speaking to NYMC students, faculty and staff, Mr. Raab and Matthew Bonilla, right, vice president of student administrative services, TCUS, presented the overarching goals of the initiative, discussed benefits and features to NYMC constituencies and unveiled the look of the new NYMC student portal. Stephanie A. Halvax, M.S. '15, is one of 16 students, to obtain a perfect score on the national speech-language pathology board examination, the PRAXIS, one of the requirements for national certification and state licensure in the field. More than 8,000 students nationwide sat for the exam. The PRAXIS examination was recently reconstructed and revalidated and the new exam has been in place for one year. NYMC graduates have historically maintained a record-breaking first-time pass rate of 100%.

Haque, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, placed third in the category of cellular/molecular biology at the 31st Annual Upstate New York Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held on March 8 - 9 at the University of Albany, State University of New York. She presented "MTOR Regulates the Phenotypic Modulation of De-differentiated Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Vascular Disease."

Haque, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, was awarded the outstanding presentation prize for excellent research at the "Regenerative Medicine: Transitioning Therapeutics from Cells to the Clinic" conference hosted by the New York Academy of Sciences and F1000 on February 22. She presented a poster, "Mesenchymal Stem Cells Mediated Immunosuppression of Mouse Splenocytes is Mediated via the CCL1/CCR8 Pathway."
