School of Medicine Class of 2020 Celebrates Match Day Virtually

More than 200 members of the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2020 marked a major milestone on March 20, as they celebrated matching to their medical residency programs, the next step on the path to their careers as physicians. Though the Medical Education Center, usually packed with students, family and friends for the traditional letter opening ceremony stood empty this year, a live stream of the virtual event allowed family and friends to join in the celebration as students learned where they matched online. Within moments of the noon release of match results, the tweet storm of congratulations began as students excitedly shared their match results. View the video and read full article and press release on Match Day.
Adjusting to the Culture Shock of Social Distancing

How to Adjust to and Thrive in Our New Normal

If social distancing is taking its toll on your mental wellness--you are not alone, says David Stern, M.D., co-director of the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. "Understand this is a new and unique situation that will take some adjustment. Cut yourself some slack and realize you will be unproductive and anxious initially but with mindfulness and creativity, we can adjust to this new normal," he says.

Dr. Stern suggests:
  • Be concrete and think of all the things you can do to prepare your environment and be safe. Think about the basics: food, shelter, money, etc.
  • Make a new schedule for yourself.  Structure can help with the transition, making this new way of living easier. Think about best times of the day to study, exercise, socialize, eat and relax.
  • Be flexible and open to change with respect to how you do things.  This is uncharted territory for you.
  • Reach out to friends and family and set times to connect by phone or video. Have fun and be creative.
Health Sciences Library Offers Online Access and Services

While the New York Medical College community adapts to the ever changing COVID-19 pandemic, the Health Sciences Library (HSL) continues providing  online access to resources and a virtual service model.  Librarians are available remotely for research assistance, consultations, instruction, search services, trouble-shooting access, and document delivery. Interlibrary loan service is currently stalled but will return soon, and late fees are being waived. "We are prepared to continue serving the needs of our library users and we hope they take advantage of all of our online resources and continued service," said Marie T. Ascher, M.S., M.P.H., the Lillian Hetrick Huber Endowed Director of the Health Sciences Library. Keep up on the latest news on the  HSL blog.
