Robert M. Califf, M.D., Will Deliver 158th Commencement Address
Robert M. Califf, M.D., the Donald F. Fortin M.D., Professor of Cardiology in the School of Medicine at Duke University and former commissioner the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will address graduates of the Class of 2017 at NYMC's 158th Commencement exercises in Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, May 24. As the top official of the FDA, Dr. Califf strengthened programs and policies to enable the agency to carry out its mission to protect and promote the public health. Read more...

Graduate Student Research Forum Showcases Impressive Scientific Work
Students in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences shared their research projects with the College community at the 29th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum held on March 22. Sponsored by the Graduate Student Association (GSA), the event showcased student research in progress in the form of 20 poster and ten oral presentations. A highlight of the day was the keynote address by Lasker award winning virologist Charles M. Rice, Ph.D., far left, who presented "Hepatitis C: From Discovery to Cure." Dr. Rice is the Maurice R. and Corinne P. Greenberg Professor in Virology and Scientific and Executive Director at the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C at Rockefeller University. He was awarded the 2016 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for his work on the development of a system to study the replication of the virus that causes hepatitis C and using it to revolutionize the treatment of the chronic disease. NYMC Hosts Women's Heart Health Discussion with Expert Panel
 On March 20, D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., right, dean of the School of Medicine, moderated a panel presentation, Heart Health: What Every Woman Needs to Know, co-presented with the American Heart Association (AHA). The speakers provided an overview of heart disease in the U.S., noting especially its prevalence among women. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., with more women dying of cardiovascular disease than all forms of cancer, according to the AHA. Presenters, from left were: Patrick W. Thomas, M.D., M.B.A., FACC, board president of the Putnam County American Heart Association and chief of cardiology and chairman of the Department of Medicine at Hudson Valley Hospital and Tanya Dutta, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, NYMC, and cardiologist at Westchester Heart and Vascular, Westchester Medical Center. Nicholas S. Janiga, J.D., Is Named Chief Counsel
 Nicholas S. Janiga, J.D., has been named chief counsel to New York Medical College (NYMC). He will be responsible for primary representation of the Office of the General Counsel at NYMC through the oversight of the College's legal affairs and institutional compliance process.
Mr. Janiga has more than a decade of experience in higher education law including strategic planning, contracting, creative problem solving, risk mitigation, corporate governance, and regulatory representation as general counsel of an allied health postsecondary institution and as senior educational counsel at Dow Lohnes, PLLC (now Cooley, LLP).

HSL Hosts Exhibit and Special Presentation on Violence Against Women
 The Health Sciences Library hosted a special presentation on March 21 by Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, left, professor of health policy and management and global health director in the School of Health Sciences and Practice and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine in the School of Medicine. The presentation, "Role of Women Physicians in Addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV) AMWA and Human Trafficking," was held in conjunction with the exhibit the HSL is currently hosting, "Confronting Violence: Improving Women's Lives." The exhibit, produced by the National Library of Medicine, explores the stories of the nurses who witnessed the effects of domestic violence and campaigned for change. Marie T. Ascher, M.S., M.P.H., the Lillian Hetrick Huber Endowed Director Health Sciences Library, welcomed Dr. Murthy who also serves as NGO Representative of the Medical Women's International Association to the United Nations, NGO CSW NY Executive Member to the United Nations and Program Chair International Health Section, Governing Councilor of the American Public Health Association. The exhibit will be on display through April 8 in the School of Health Sciences and Practice building and April 9 - 21 in the Skyline building.

 New York Medical College and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan hosted the 2017 Chancellor's Resident Research Day on March 21 at Metropolitan Hospital Center. Edward C.  Camille A. Clare, M.D., M.P.H. '11, left, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and interim associate dean of diversity and inclusion for the School of Medicine, and Praise Augustus, M.D., a PGY-3 resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Westchester Medical Center, presented an e-poster, "Women Speak Out: Female Genital Cutting," at the Female Genital Mutilation Management and Prevention Symposium at Geneva University Hospitals in Switzerland held March 13 - 14. Their research is in collaboration with Jacqueline Greenfield, C.N.M., instructor of obstetrics and gynecology.

 Dr. Mark Hasten, second from right, chairman of the Board of Trustees, was honored with a Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) pin (on his right lapel), for the many contributions of NYMC to the Westchester community and economy. Michael Kaplowitz, far left, presented the pin on March 23, which until this date has only been worn by elected Westchester legislators. Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., second from left, and Margaret A. Cunzio, District 2 legislator, joined the occasion.

 Kutluk Oktay, M.D., left, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, medicine, and cell biology and anatomy, was awarded the Rogerio A. Lobo Award by the Society for Reproductive Investigation at its 64th Annual Scientific Meeting held in Orlando, March 15 - 18. The award was established in 2007 to recognize the most outstanding contribution to Reproductive Sciences by a member of the Society for Reproductive Investigation. The award is named in honor of Dr. Lobo, former president of the Society and former editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (JSGI) which is now Reproductive Sciences.
