Lasker Award-Winning Virologist Set to Address the 29th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum
The 29th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum, sponsored by the Graduate Student Association in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences, is set for Wednesday, March 22. This year's forum welcomes noted virologist Charles M. Rice, Ph.D., the Maurice R. and Corinne P. Greenberg Professor in Virology and Scientific and Executive Director at the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C at Rockefeller University, as the keynote speaker. Black History Month Event at Metropolitan Honors NYMC Alumna Myra Adele Logan, M.D. '33
College affiliate NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan closed out a series of events celebrating Black History Month with a program on February 27 featuring NYMC alumna Myra Adele Logan, M.D. '33. Dr. Logan was the inaugural recipient of the Walter Gray Crump Sr., M.D., Scholarship, created in 1928 specifically to support minority medical students. She was also likely the first woman to perform open heart surgery and was among the first African American women elected a fellow to the American College of Surgeons. As an NYMC medical student, she spent much of her clinical training in the wards of Metropolitan. She died on January 13, 1977, at the age of 68.
Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, addressed the crowd via video to unveil a plaque dedicated to Dr. Logan. Another plaque commemorating Dr. Logan is on display on the Valhalla campus just outside of the Health Sciences Library.
The event included a keynote address from Aaron Barnette, director of strategic partnerships and mentoring services from the Eagle Academy Foundation, a network of schools for at-risk inner city young men, and a performance by the IMPACT Repertory Theatre Performance Company, a Harlem based youth group who uses current events and their own personal experience as material to explore the issues facing young people in America. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer, Alina Moran, M.P.A., pictured with the commemorative plaque, provided closing remarks.

Officials Talk Shop at BioInc@NYMC
New York State Senator Terrence P. Murphy, second from left, invited Empire State Development (ESD) President, Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner Howard Zemsky, third from left, for a visit at BioInc@NYMC on February 27. Mr. Zemsky was appointed by Governor Cuomo to lead New York State's economic development program, including a newly announced $650 million life sciences initiative. BioInc@ NYMC has received priority designation and funding in earlier budget cycles in concert with federal, county, and private support. Joining the visit clockwise from left were: Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., vice president for government affairs and dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice; Randi D. Schwartz, M.B.A., director of BioInc@NYMC and associate dean for academic administration, School of Medicine; Barry Kappel, Ph.D., M.B.A., president and chief executive officer of Sapience Therapeutics Inc., a growing client-firm at BioInc@NYMC; and D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., chief scientific officer at BioInc@NYMC and dean of the School of Medicine.

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., left, vice president for government affairs and dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice, met with New York State Assembly Member Kevin M. Byrne, who was elected to a first term last November. Dr. Amler briefed Mr. Byrne on the impressive growth of BioInc@NYMC and its client-firms, as well as NYMC's Center for Disaster Medicine and the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC.

Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, was co-organizer of a workshop on "The Biological Challenges in Morphogenesis" at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute, The Ohio State University, February 20-24. He presented two talks: "In the Footsteps of D'Arcy W. Thompson: Physico-Genetics of Morphological Evolution," and "The Two-Galectin Tetrapod Limb Patterning Network and the Fin-Limb Transition: Synergies of Experiment, Modeling, and Phylogenomics."

Rajamma Mathew, M.D., associate professor of clinical pediatrics, received the 2017 Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) Abstract Award and travel grant for her abstract "Caveolin-1 Loss/Dysfunction May in Part Facilitate Metabolic Shift in Pulmonary Hypertension" presented at the 11th PVRI Annual World Congress on PVD held in Miami, January 26-29.
