Graduate Medical Education Programs Receive Continued Full Accreditation With Flying Colors
After a periodic review of the School of Medicine (SOM) and its 58 graduate medical education programs, New York Medical College (NYMC) received official notification of its continued full accreditation as an institutional sponsor of graduate medical education (GME) from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The continued full accreditation is valid through 2027, subject to further additional periodic reviews that include site visits and the evaluation of policies, clinical facilities, faculty expertise, faculty development, procedural experience, research opportunities, adequacy of supervision, duty hour compliance, evaluation systems as well as patient safety education, professionalism, communication skills, cultural competency and resident involvement in quality improvement activities. An ACGME institutional review requires a concerted group effort. The comprehensive review included individual and group interviews with Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, and Gladys M. Ayala, M.D., M.P.H., SOM interim vice dean, approximately 90 NYMC personnel including peer-selected residents and fellows, residency and fellowship program directors, program coordinators, core faculty members from multiple specialties, members of the GME committee, chairs of the hospital-based GME subcommittees, hospital associate deans, department chairmen, and the staff of the Office of GME. "The successful outcome of the review is an indication of the excellence of the graduate medical education that the College and its affiliated hospitals jointly provide to almost 1,000 physicians in primary care, specialty and advanced sub-specialty training in the NYMC Consortium," said Richard G. McCarrick, M.D., M.H.A., vice dean for graduate medical education and designated institutional official.
