"Innovation and Inspiration" Fuels Successful NYMedTalks
Although the name and format has changed from Student Physician Awareness Day (SPAD) to NYMedTalks, the three-decade tradition of a day-long event planned, organized and conducted by medical students to supplement the medical school curriculum and provide a forum for discussion and interaction among students, faculty and administration, remains the same. This year's NYMedTalks, held on April 8, stimulated the audience with presentations by distinguished speakers. The theme of the day "Innovation and Inspiration" was delivered by the variety of presentation topics spanning research in genomics and space travel, marriages in medicine, medical marijuana, big data and precision medicine, LGBT clinical medicine, and surgical innovation in craniofacial surgery. SHSP Inducts New Members into Delta Omega and Alpha Eta Honor Societies

 On April 4, the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) held a dual-induction ceremony, welcoming a second class of members into Delta Alpha, SHSP's chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, as well as inaugurating the first class of inductees into Alpha Eta, the national honor society for allied health professionals. SHSP Hosts Movie Screening to Mark National Public Health Week
 National Public Health Week (NPHW) was celebrated at NYMC with a movie screening of Beasts of the Southern Wild on April 7. This year's theme was Healthiest Nation 2030 and included the tenets: build a nation of safe, healthy communities; help all young people graduate from high school; promote social justice and health; give everyone a choice of healthy food; prepare for the health effects of climate change; provide quality health care for everyone; and strengthen the public health infrastructure. Student Healthcare Executive (StuHE) secretary and M.P.H. candidate Class of 2016 Rida Mahmood, helped coordinate the event. Pedro Laureano, Ph.D., assistant professor of health policy and management, moderated a discussion after the screening. "We can teach you theory, techniques, research, practice and policy. However, we cannot teach you mercy, compassion, humility or to allow your hearts to be broken for the less fortunate. Where do you see yourself in public health?" Dr. Laureano asked the students.

 A new mini-mart machine is now available in Doc's Café and offers a selection of entrees, salads and wraps. Vegetarian options, yogurt, fruit and burgers, hot dog and chicken tender combinations are also available. A menu and a list of ingredients are posted next to the machine.

* Swipe your credit card on the left side of the machine.
* Open door when instructed.
* Remove product(s) you wish to purchase.
* Close door after selection is made.
* Once the door closes, ALL sales are final.
* If an item is removed for viewing and NOT placed back in its original location, you will be charged. The machine recognizes a sale by weight and any item not placed back in its original location will be recognized as a sale.

 Several members of the Department of Pharmacology participated in the 16th International Winter Eicosanoid Conference (WEC) held March 13-16 in Baltimore. Michal L. Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor and chair of pharmacology, served as co-organizer and Gail D. Anderson, administrative assistant, served as conference coordinator of this meeting that was founded in 1998 by former Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology, John C. McGiff, M.D. Dr. Schwartzman chaired a session on 20-HETE and paid tribute to Dr. John McGiff (1927-2013) with a special presentation while introducing the John C. McGiff Memorial Lecture.
In the session on 20-HETE, Petra Rocic, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology, presented, 20-HETE is a Major Regulator of Coronary Collateral Growth in Metabolic Syndrome. Pharmacology alum Victor Garcia, Ph.D. '15, presented The 20-HETE Receptor. Austin M. Guo, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, received an Elsevier/POLM Young Investigator Award and presented 20-HETE Contributes to Ischemia-Induced Angiogenesis.
