It's Official: Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College Set to Open This Fall

This week, New York State Board of Regents approval was received to establish the Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College at 19 Skyline Drive. Accreditation by the American Dental Association was received earlier this year. The TCDM will include a four-year pre-doctoral program for students and a continuing education program for practicing dentists. It will be the first new dental school in nearly 50 years in New York State. Enrollment is expected to be approximately 110 students in the first class and when at full capacity, the school will include approximately 440 students. The TCDM will house a 132-chair community denta l clinic focused on providing affordable and quality treatment to patients in local underserved communities.  Read more...

 
Sonia A. Velez, M.D., J.D., Is Named Interim Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine

Sonia A. Velez, M.D., J.D.
, assistant professor of family and community medicine, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She completed the family medicine residency program at Saint Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers, N.Y., where she served as a chief resident in her final year. She joined the NYMC faculty in 1998  and became the family medicine residency program director in 2006. She holds a special interest in women's health and health law. 

"Over the past twenty years my dedication to academic family medicine has allowed me to appreciate the accomplishments, struggles and challenges that currently confront the discipline. These are national, regional and local concerns that require a leader proficient in strategic planning, managing change, complex financial balancing, command of the institutional culture and collaboration with external partners," said Dr. Velez. "I am committed to being part of the changes needed to help the discipline flourish."

 
Lectureship Honors the Late Gabor Kaley, Ph.D.

The Third Annual Drs. Gabor and Harriette Kaley Endowed Lectureship held on April 14 welcomed a host of faculty including several professors emeriti, students and staff, to Chouake Auditorium to honor the memory of Gabor Kaley, Ph.D., who served on the NYMC faculty for 43 years. When he stepped down from his post as chairman in 2007, after 37 years, Dr. Kaley was the longest sitting chair of physiology in the nation. He died in 2011 at the age of 85.
