School of Medicine Class of 2016 Excels in the Largest Match on Record
|
March 18 was another milestone for the School of Medicine Class of 2016 toward becoming physicians. It was Match Day, when NYMC fourth-year medical students joined 42,370 registered applicants in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) main residency match to learn where the next phase of their medical training will be. The lobby of the Medical Education Center was loud and boisterous as the assembled students waited anxiously, shoulder-to-shoulder with their families and friends, faculty and administration, for the appointed hour to open the sealed envelopes that held their fate. NYMC Honors Founder William Cullen Bryant
|
On March 22, the NYMC community took a step back in time and spent an evening getting better acquainted with the life and achievements of NYMC founder, William Cullen Bryant. While Bryant died in 1878 at the age of 83, the event - which featured presentations and guided tours of the Bryant exhibit in the Health Sciences Library - made it abundantly clear that Bryant's legacy remains alive and well today at NYMC. AOA Iota Chapter Hosts 60th Annual Visiting Professor Lecture
|
The New York Iota chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society, welcomed Ruth-Marie Fincher, M.D., second from right, vice dean for academic affairs emerita, Medical College of Georgia (MCG) Augusta University, as the 60th Annual AOA Visiting Professor on March 23. Iota Chapter Councilor William H. Frishman, M.D., left, the Barbara and William Rosenthal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, professor of pharmacology, called Dr. Fincher, a renowned leader in medical education, "the Flexner of our times," in his introduction. Dr. Fincher presented "A Stethoscope, a Pen, and a Compass" to the audience of proud AOA inductees and their families, faculty and administration. AMWA Honors Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., FAMWA, FRSPH
The American Medical Women's Association's (AMWA) highest honor - the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal - has been bestowed upon one of NYMC's own: Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., FAMWA, FRSPH, associate professor of public health practice, health policy and management, clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine and global health program director. Named in honor of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States and a pioneer in promoting the education of women in medicine, the medal is awarded annually to a female physician who has made the most outstanding contributions to the cause of women in the field of medicine. SHSP Hosts Asthma Educator Institute

The Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley (CEHCHV), a center in the School of Health Sciences and Practice Institute of Public Health, hosted a two-day Asthma Educator Institute on March 17 and 18, in collaboration with the American Lung Association and the Hudson Valley Asthma Coalition. The Asthma Educator Institute is for individuals committed to providing National Institutes of Health (NIH) asthma guidelines-based care and serves as a preparatory course for those qualified to take the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) exam. Thomas J. Allen Joins NYMC as Director of Capital Projects and Facilities
|
Thomas J. Allen has been named director of capital projects and facilities, providing leadership to the NYMC facilities staff and overseeing all departmental operations and budget. In this role, Mr. Allen will be responsible for the development and execution of capital projects and equipment, as well as for overseeing design and construction, maintenance and operations of the NYMC campus. Mr. Allen comes to NYMC from Vassar College, where he served as executive director of buildings and grounds and construction services and director of capital program management since 2007. He joined Vassar in 2000 as a senior project manager. Mr. Allen attended the University of New Haven and Waterbury State Technical College, with a concentration in electrical engineering. He reports to Michael Rogovin, J.D., vice president of operations, with a dotted line reporting relationship to Jeffrey Rosengarten, senior vice president of operations, Touro College and University System.

IT Student Help Desk is Available in the HSL
|
Students are reminded that an IT help desk is available in the Mastronardi Information Center in the Health Sciences Library. The staffed hours are noon to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
John De Agustini, help desk manager, staffs some of the shifts.

Joseph T. English, M.D., the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine).
Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D.
, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, presented "Potential of Neuropeptide Y for Preventing or Treating Post-traumatic Stress Disorder" at the annual meeting of the Israel Society for Biological Psychiatry in Kibbutz Hagoshrim, Israel, held March 8-10.
Ira Schwartz, Ph.D.
, professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, was the keynote speaker at Touro University Nevada's 10
th
Annual Research Day on March 14. He presented "Even Bacteria Must Watch Their Carbs: Lyme Disease, Carbohydrate Metabolism and the Borrelia Burgdorteri Enzootic Cycle."
