New York Medical College and Touro College and University System Host Second COVID-19 Symposium

More than 720 participants tuned in to the second COVID-19 symposium, "What we know. What we don't know. What you need to know," via an online webinar on March 30 when there were more than 145,000 reported cases in the U.S. Although the title remained appropriate, it was a stark difference from the first such symposium on January 31, when there were 200 people in attendance at the Touro College Midtown Manhattan campus and only seven reported cases in the U.S. Read the full article on the COVID-19 presentation and view the video.

GHHS Supports Student Volunteer Efforts Amidst Pandemic

Members of the New York Medical College (NYMC) chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) are exemplars of compassionate patient care who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine and they are demonstrating just that-in spades--during the COVID-19 pandemic. To support their fellow health care workers and boost morale, the GHHS is doing the yeoman's job of overseeing student volunteer activities and spearheading their own initiatives in response to the current crisis. Clinical Skills and Simulation Center Pilots Virtual Standardized Patient Assessments

The adage, "The show must go on," rings true for many circumstances but it is especially true for providing clinical skills education to medical students. The staff of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC) at New York Medical College has successfully answered this challenge by piloting virtual standardized patient assessments for most of the School of Medicine (SOM) clerkships as well as for the pre-clinical years through a combination of platforms including Zoom and LearningSpace. These sessions have seamlessly provided a collaborative experience for students to continue to hone their clinical skills for conducting the patient interview, exhibiting strong interpersonal communication skills, strengthening clinical reasoning and utilizing best practices for clinical documentation. "This is also a great opportunity and a robust method for teaching students how to navigate telemedicine," said Katharine Yamulla, M.A., CHSE, senior director of competency-based assessment and clinical skills education and director of the CSSC. Faculty Expert, Patricia L. Gerbarg, M.D., Provides Tips on Breathing Techniques for Coping During Unprecedented Times

The type of prolonged stress that people are experiencing with the COVID-19 crisis shifts their nervous systems into a state of sympathetic nervous system dominance, including anxiety, hypervigilance, fear and emotional distancing. According to Patricia L. Gerbarg, M.D. , clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, the fastest and safest way to shift the nervous system toward a state of feeling safe, relaxed and engaged with others, is a technique called coherent breathing, using slowed breathing at around five breaths per minute for most adults.
